Corrupted incremental backup after some time

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I found that after some time my incremental backup simply became corrupted. Backup no longer run, and the log view mentioned that the last backup file is corrupted.

I have this issue with my other backup as well.

A background of my system :
Windows 8.1 system with network drive (Time Capsule). Space are still plenty in that drive

Could anyone please advise the following :
- What can I do to improve the backup reliability?
- Is there anyway for me to delete the last backup and somewhat continue from there as if the last backup is simply removed? The last time I did this, my backup became messy and it split itself into two backups

Really appreciate the help on this. Thanks.

"Corrupted" is, unfortunately, a rather non-specific error message, in spite of its rather specific sounding term. It really just means that ATI can't validate the archive, which can be caused by disk errors or connection errors, rather than any problems with the .tib file itself.

Validation failure is often due to hardware issues. To troubleshoot, see Grover's new backup and restore guides http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618 and http://kb.acronis.com/content/1517

Run chkdsk /r on each partition of the internal drive, and on the external HD. If there are hidden partitions, assign letters to them so you can chkdsk.
Also run a drive checking utility from the drive manufacturer, as those sometimes catch errors missed by chkdsk.

Don't connect external drives via a hub, a port in a monitor, a USB extension cord, etc. Connect the external drive directly to a USB port on the rear of the computer case.

Yes, you may delete that backup task and create a new one.

The most recent backups can be deleted from within the program via this method. Always deleted the "most recent" first and if deleting more than one file, then the next delete would be the resulting "most recent" si the slice number ramains continuous.

how to delete backup files using Acronis Backup 'Explorer'

When you say your backups "no longer run", I interpreting that to mean that the backup attempts to run but fails to complete.
As MVP Tuttle has indicated, disk errors could be involved on both the source and target.
If backing up to an external disk, use a quality cable as well.

Thank you for the inputs! I am backing up to a network drive (time capsule). Do you know of any specific compatibility issue with that?

Many users have issues with NAS, not because of True Image but because the router gets overloaded with data throughput and cannot keep a consistent enough connection with the NAS for True Image to image or restore. Certain models of router and known to suffer from this issue.

Got it. At least with the capability to delete the corrupted backup, I feel safer. I do verify the backup periodically.

Last question in relation to this. I did not do proper backup deletion previously (I deleted the last version through windows explorer), and it causes the backup to be split. Is there any way that I can recombine those backup into one again?

Thanks

You could at least try to validate the other pieces. ATI might ask you for volume 1 (the full backup) or volume N. If ATI can track back its backups, you should see the versions when you click on recover files in the original backup task. If that doesn't work, make sure you validate your active task.
If you don't need to hold to these backups files, I would recommend you delete all the tasks from ATI, delete any remnant file on the NAS and then create a new backup task.
With any partial backup, just make sure you most recent full validated backup never gets too old for you to go back to. Set up ATI to create a new full backup often enough not to reach that point.
