Credential problem with backup over home network

Thread needs solution

My desktop machine and my laptop both run XP Pro SP3. I have "simple file sharing" turned on on both machines, with all drives set to "allow network users to change my files." Some users on the desktop machine have passwords, some don't. The single user on the laptop has no password. Initially, the "guest" account on the desktop machine was disabled.

I've been backing up the laptop to an external drive on my desktop machine over the home network with TI Home 2009 and 2010 without incident.

After installing TI Home 2014 on the laptop, attempting to create a new backup plan going to a directory on the desktop's external drive, I was presented with a dialog asking for my credentials.

None of the user names and passwords I entered were allowed.

I was finally able to get the backup plan created by enabling the "guest" account on the desktop machine. Once that was done, there was no longer any request for credentials.

I suspect that TI Home 2014 does not play well with XP when it's in "simple file sharing" mode, which does not require entering userids and passwords for accessing files over the network.
