Deleting is not deleting

Thread needs solution

I have my backup scheme set to Incremental, and I've told it to create a new full version every 5 incremental versions, and to delete version chains older than 6 days. I am looking at my backups and currently have 2 full backups and 5 incremental backups. Fortunately, I'm using a 1TB drive for backup, or I would have run out of room a long time ago.

Maybe I misunderstand how this thing works, but what I want it to do is every 5 days, create a completely new full backup and completely erase all previous full and incremental backups. so, on day 6, when I look at my backup folder, I should have one full backup, and that is all. Is that not what this does? Can I get it to do that?

Jesse,

In the autocleaning options, choose keep the most recent 1 version chain. ATI will complete a full chain, then a new full backup before erasing the old version chain.

It is also possible that ATI lost track of some backups. If you see the updated scheme work well except for some old backup (chain) that is left alone, check under explore or explore all versions to verify you can see the date of the old backup in the timeline line. If you cannot see it there, you can delete the file manually.

Jesse,
Past experience has shown that often times a problem or a bad file does not make itself known until some time later. I trust you have planned for such an instance some by retaining some prior backups via whatever means available to you. The backup retained should be disk option backups so all partitions are included in the backups being retained. A disk option backup is best should you need to replace your hard drive due to a virus or failure. Just trying to be safe.

I saw nothing labeled "keep most recent" under the options. However, I saw "Store no more than X recent version chains". Assuming that is the setting you are referring to, I have changed setting. We'll see what happens next time it creates a new chain.

When I clicked on Explore all versions, it came up with a warning, "Specify location of version 1". Wasn't sure if I should browse for that, or "Ignore this version" or what. Maybe this indicates a problem of some sort?

Yes it indicates that ATI has lost track of one of the archive files. When the message shows up, click on browse and browse to the first of file of the backup chain. If ATI is happy with your selection, you are in good shape. Validate your backup.
If ATI is not happy, consider your backup is lost and do another one.
