Dell 7480 laptop

Thread needs solution

I can't image my new Dell 7480 laptop because the drives don't show when I choose to 'Backup' the laptop. I didn't have any trouble with the last model E7470. Laptop software for drivers and windows is all up to date.

Magid IT, welcome to these user forums.

Assuming, based on your post in this forum, you have ATIH 2015, and further assuming that you are using the Acronis Rescue Media (not the Windows Acronis application), then the most probable reason why your drives do not show up is because the Rescue Media lacks the device drivers needed by the type of drives you have.

I would expect that if you attempted the backup using the Windows Acronis application that the drives should be shown without problem as the integrated Windows drivers would be used.

If you have NVMe / M.2 form factor drives then these were introduced after ATIH 2015 came to end of support and you would need to use either ATIH 2016 or 2017 for support to be included in the Rescue Media.

I downloaded the trial version of ATIH 2017 and am getting the same result.

I am using the Rescue Media.

I don't want to use it to backup the machine, I want to use it for creating an image of this model land re-using the image on like machines.

What is the type and model of the disk drives in your computer?

If you are going to try to migrate a backup from one computer to other computers, then you may also need to use the Acronis Universal Restore utility to prepare the restored OS image to work on the other computers if there are any significant differences in the hardware used (compared to the source computer where the backup image is created).

Well, the fix is posted throughout the forums on several occasions. Although the rescue media really has no restrictions for use when it comes to the licensing, you're supposed to have a valid license for every machine you use it on per the terms of the license agreement. Will Acronis do anything about it, not likely, but  I won't offer any specific help here because you've admitted to wanting to use it in a manner not intended. Suggest you search the forums a bit as the solutions have been posted on several occasions.

I don't have Acronis installed on any of the laptops. I only use the recovery media to create images.

You should contact technical support to clarify the use of the rescue media and deploying images to addtional computers for your own benefit.  However, I believe the rescue media, when used for deploying images, is also subsequent to the requirement for having the number of licenses purchased as used for deployments.  Perhaps I'm wrong, but again, that's where Acronis can clarify that for you.  If you're deploying for a business (or your own business), better to make sure so that you don't find yourself in a situation for misusing a license.  It's rare that companies hold licenses accountable if they can't track the usage themselves, but, there's that possibility.

LICENSING POLICY

All of the Acronis® and GroupLogic® software products ("Software") are licensed to end-users by Acronis International GmbH ("Acronis").

The standard licensing policy is based on the number of machines, either physical, virtual running on an End User’s premises or in anyone’s cloud, which our Software is used for. A "Machine" means a single operating environment. For instance, a Windows or Linux operating system is considered a single "machine," even if multiple operating systems are installed on a single computer.

Standard License. A single license is required for use on a single machine; such license is non-transferable and non-assignable, except in limited circumstances. The limited circumstances include where the original machine the Software license was deployed on: (i) becomes non-functioning or obsolete; and (ii) is taken out of service. In such cases, the license is transferable to a replacement machine.

KEYS / PIRACY

Acronis issues license keys for each license purchased. The end-user is authorized to use each license key to activate and use the Software within the parameters of this Licensing Policy. All subscription licenses are considered activated upon delivery unless a specific date is otherwise identified in the purchase order. When purchasing subscription licenses of any GroupLogic Software, all existing perpetual license s of that same GroupLogic Software are retired and terminated as of the shipment date of the purchase subscription licenses keys. The use, distribution, or sale of Acronis license keys for any purpose other than as specifically permitted by this Policy and in the End User License Agreement is strictly prohibited. Acronis takes all instances of unauthorized use of its Software seriously, and such unauthorized use may result in civil or criminal action to enforce the terms of the EULA and this Policy, and the imposition of civil or criminal fines or penalties. Subscription licensed Software may contain serial keys that are time-stamped and will deactivate upon expiration of the paid subscription term.

SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT – 2015-8-14

1. SOFTWARE LICENSE GRANT Subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement, upon payment of all license fees owed for the Software, Licensor grants and Licensee accepts a nonexclusive, nontransferable, non-assignable (unless such prohibition is otherwise prohibited by local law), limited license (“Software License”) to use the Software solely in accordance with the terms and conditions of this Agreement. The Software is to be installed and/or deployed on the specific number of machines or virtual environments for which a Software License has been purchased and paid for. The number of physical machines and virtual environments on which You are permitted to install the Software also depends on the type of product that You have purchased. You may use a single Software License for one physical machine or virtual environment unless otherwise specified under the “Acronis Licensing Policy,” which can be found at www.acronis.com/legal/licensing.htm.

If your Software License is designated for only one physical machine or virtual environment at a time, you may transfer your software License to a new machine provided the original installation is completely removed and no longer in use. If you wish to deploy the Software on multiple machines, you must purchase the appropriate license (or additional software licenses) for the additional deployments. Certain types of products may only be deployed once and cannot be reused once used; further information regarding these products can be found under the Acronis Licensing Policy.

Hello Magid IT,

Bobbo's point about Acronis True Image software licensing is absolutely correct. I would like to add that you may be using a wrong product for your purposes. For mass system deployment there is Acronis Snap Deploy.

In addition to centralized management, unattended deployment, PXE support, various customizations for deployment tasks and several ways of performing deployment and other features, Acronis Snap Deploy includes ability to easily create a WinPE-based bootable media with custom drivers. In your case, you could just get drivers for Dell 7480, and for your other target machines, from Dell, and add them all to the bootable media. Download a trial version of Acronis Snap Deploy from www.acronis.com/business/enterprise-solutions/image-deployment/

Regards,

Slava
