Diff back-up Scheme isn't what I envisioned.

Thread needs solution

I made a Diff back-up scheme and quickly filled a Drobo up. I probably did not fill in the specifications properly.

What I want to accomplish is to make a full back-up and then do differential back-ups for the next 4 weeks. Then delete that and start again fresh for the next month.

They aren't deleting and I have fill up the Drobo. What would be the correct settings to accomplish that plan? I don't think I am understanding the "chains" part.

Maybe I should add what settings are my latest (my latest attempt to get it right):

Schedule: weekly

Scheme:
Create full version after every "4" differential versions.
Store no more than "1" recent version chains.

I removed the older scheme and entered this scheme today. Is it the right settings for keeping a monthly FULL and weekly differentials?

Hopefully, you started again with a new backup task. Look at example GH13 and make your scheme also reads "custom" plus your settings of

Schedule: weekly

Scheme:
Create full version after every "4" differential versions.
Store no more than "1" recent version chains.

------------------------------
With those settings, a chain takes 5 weeks (35 days) to complete and a new full will occur at the start of each 6 week interval.
Storage space needed is for 1 chain of 5 files (1 Full plus 4 Diff) PLUS ADDITIONAL SPACE FOR 1 MORE FULL BACKUP.
--------------------------------------------------------------

With those settings, your chain size ( or retention quota) is 5 (1 full plus 4 diff)
The deletion of oldest chain will occur when quota of 5 is exceeded.
It is NOT exceeded until the quota reaches 6 so deletion of oldest chain will occur seconds following the completion of the backup #6 which is the 2nd Full backup or Full_B2_S1_V1.

After Full B2 is completed, all 5 files of chain 1 (all of B1) will be deleted leaving only the single Full B2_s1_v1.
As backups schedule continues, you will be accrue 4 more diff files to complete chain 2 of 5 files and reach your retention quota of 5.

Retention quota is NOT exceeded until the quota reaches 6 so deletion of oldest chain will occur seconds following the completion of the full B3 backup which is the 3rd Full backup or Full_B3_S1_V1.

Future deletions of oldest chain will occur following successful completion of each full backup as each future Full occurs.
