Difficulty setting Differential backup for 5 versions

Thread needs solution

I have two issues - I can't start a backup by clicking the backup now button, and can't set the system so that it reliably starts a new chain after 5 versions.

1. When I miss a backup, I try to do an immediate backup by clicking the Backup Now Button, and though it changes color when I mouse over it, clicking on it won't initiate a backup. It just sits there waiting till the next backup cycle.

2. I have tried to set my backup so that it will do 5 versions of the differential backup, and then start a new chain. But last time, it got all the way to 13 versions before it started a new chain. Even though I have set the backup options to only 5 versions. Then I save it, and mark it as the default, and then save the screen again. It still won't start a new chain after finishing 5 versions. When I change the time of the backup, it seems to reset it's clock so that it knows the new time for the backup, but it won't reset the chain counter.

Thanks,

Larry

Too many backups is probably self induced and is it not your fault. Let me explain.

When you edit and make changes to an existing task, the program allows the changes but the changes rarely fix the problem and the permitted edits just delays or continues the existing problem without a fix. I do believe, however, you can get the program to do what you want but only if you are willing to create a new task with the correct initial settings and make no changes once the task has been created and backups begin, except for minor scheduling changes.

Set up a new backup scheme as per the example GH13. Use the full plus 5 differentials which will start a new chain following the completion of each 6 backups.
Additionally, set the cleanup/retention for how many chains (chain= 6 files; full +5 diff) you wish to keep before automatic scheduled deletion begins. The cleanup option is the "Store no more than 'n recent version chains. The 'n is your retention quota or how many chains you wish to keep before automatic deletion by the program of the oldest chain begins.
If you use 1 as the 'n number, automatic cleanup/deletion will occur after Full B2 backup #7). Chain 1 will be deleted. Only Full B2 remains. with new diff to accrue.

If you use 2 as the 'n number, keeping 2 chains, first automatic cleanup/deletion will occur after Full B3, backup #13. Oldest chain B1 will be deleted after Full B3 has been created. leaving Chain B2 plus full B3, Additional diff to accrue.

If you use 3 as the 'n number, keeping 3 chains, first automatic cleanup/deletion will occur after Full B4, backup #19. Oldest chain B1 will be deleted after Full B4 has been created.

When configuring the backup scheme, DO NOT USE THE "SAVE AS" OR "SAVE" OPTION LOCATED TOP RIGHT OF THE SCHEME DISPLAY.
Name of backup schemes must read "CUSTOM SCHEME" as illustrated in the example GH13.
If you wish the same scheme settings to re-appear on future task screen, click the "save as default" in lower left of display screen.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 2 Diff per chain. Store/Keep 2 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Should you find that changes needed in your scheme configuration, stop using the existing scheme and start over with a new scheme with the new settings.

General:

Depending upon the type of backup scheme you wish to create, here is an example of each type. These can be set up for Disk image, or Partition, or Files-folders backups. These example show how to set up automatic cleanup so the program will do the deletion after it reaches your set goal of how many chains to retain.

Editing an existing task is not recommended. Rarely does an edited task perform to user expectations. It is usually better to start with a new task using a new non-identical task name and point to a new storage sub-folder so each task has it own storage folder/sub-folder. Old task can be stopped or deleted from the task listings.

GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup....Store/Keep 4 versions (chains). Use whatever number best fits the individual needs..

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 2 Diff per chain. Store/Keep 2 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Edit:
Regarding your item #1. "Backup now" not responsive:
One reason that option is not responsive s that the missed backup has already started and is in process of completing when you click the "Backup Now" option. Check you scheduler/advanced options. The vey last opton along the bottom margin is an option "run if missed". If this is checked, your missed backup runs upon startup on your first logon following the missed backup.

Grover, Grover> Thank you so much. It is just surprising to me that what I am trying to do should be part of the ordinary functionality for the software, and yet it appears that these programming problems are well known. It would seem to me to be something that would be fairly easy to fix. It's not like this is "new" software on a shakedown cruise.

Be that as it may.

Based on your recommendation, I have deleted the backup routine that I was using. I have created a new one, under Custom Scheme, Differential. I have not "saved as", but have set it as the default. Then, after I created the new backup routine, I clicked the button to "backup now." AND IT WORKED. I have the next automated backup set up for Saturday night. We'll see if it does it automatically, as it should. Then it will be 5 weeks before I know if it automatically cycles to a new full backup.

So, thank you very much. You have saved me $25 for an incident call (their support is good, but you always have to pay for it.) And you saved me by ending months of frustration. I appreciate your help.
