Disaster after conflict with Seagate Diskwizard

Thread needs solution

Installed Seagate DiskWizard yesterday. Result- Diskwizard doesn't work. True Image 10.0 doesn't work. Uninstalled both. True Image refuses to reinstall. Happy to go without DiskWizard but I NEED True Image 10.0 for my daily Home Office full system backups. HELP

PS to my first post above- TI 10 has been a good and reliable backup utility for over 2 years... Acronis has a lot of goodwill in this Home Office where I sit BUT tell your colleagues who have to do with "powering" Seagate DiskWizard that if they want Acronis (and Seagate) to remain reputable they MUST build in a routine to detect existing Acronis installations and warn people that if they proceed to install DiskWizard, nothing will work from that point on. This user in this Home Office is now very very unhappy after wasting almost two hours trying to sort this so far...

I can update the posts above- for some reason perseverance paid off- one last ditch attempt at a reinstall worked!- so now I have True Image back on my machine. I have yet to test it by doing last night's backup.

But the basic issue still remains- If Acronis are writing Seagate's DiskWizard these days, please please please get it to check for existing Acronis installations and do something to avoid conflicts. Please.

Cheers.

Hi its me again. Seems I'm talking to myself here but I guess its only between 5.00 and 7.00 am in America so I can imagine even the keenest won't be at their screens just yet. I'm in Scotland so its heading on for lunchtime here...

Reason I'm back again- it occurs to me that actually I do still need assistance please, to ensure I have properly cleaned up the damage caused by trying to install DiskWizard. Thing is, True Image is essential backup software for my home office and after the problems with reinstalation, I am now concerned there may be hidden problems which could only become apparent when I really need to restore an image in an emergency:-

SO:
1) Is there some way to ensure DiskWizard is fully uninstalled ? Is there a removal tool?

2) Is there a way to ensure that after the Disk Wizard damage to my system I now have a "clean" install of TrueImage 10.0?

Look forward to advice to help with ensuring this serious problem is fully fixed.

All the best- Mark

I cannot see how anyone can truly answer your question.

Acronis does offer a cleanup tool for all recent versions of TrueImage Home and should work also for the Seagate version.
(versions 10-11-2009-2010-2011-dd10-dd11-dd11adv)

If you run it, it will uninstall any Acronis that you have currently installed.

If you boot from the Rescue CD and validate the backup and if it passes there is a pretty good chance your restores will work.
But the only way for sure is to do an actual restore.

Remember, if you want to be able to duplicate (restore a backup) your disk onto a new disk, be sure the type of backup that you have is one whereby you checkmark the disk as to what is to be included in the backup. Checkmarking the disk will cause all partitions to also become checked so tht everything will be included in the backup.

There is an additional point to be taken into consideration with both WD and Seagate's Disk software with Acronis backends, which is both WD and SG will have been able to make alterations to parts of the way the software interacts - much like Acronis' Security software and BitDefender.

The problem of interaction may be an Acronis one or could be down to fiddling by the OEM.

Hi there Colin B- thanks for your comments back to me... yes I suppose it is a hard question and one we can't ever be sure of so we just try and minimise the risks...

Pleased to hear there's a removal tool- I think I looked for it yesterday on the Acronis website and couldn't find it... could you post me a link?

Fair point about the possible role of OEM tinkering- perhaps this sort of thing is worth bringing up at some sort of tech talk when you review how things are going?

And yes, I suppose the best I can do is try a restore to make sure it all works. I have actually been trying that today... and as a result would welcome some further input...

The reason I wanted updated DIskWizard software was to prepare two new Seagate 500Gb drives for use as my backup media. It wasn't until after yesterday's nuisance that I realised that my True Image 10 can in fact do this, so I tried it and it seemed to work fine. Backups to both the drives have worked successfully. Leaving only the Restore operation, which I have been trying today. I thought I would try to clone my full system to one of the new drives from a backup image on the other.

To avoid any risk to my existing system, what I am trying is:
1) Remove existing 400Gb hard drive and put it in a safe place.
2) Instal one of the new SATA 500Gb drives in the chassis.
3) Plug in the other new SATA drive in the backup drive rack.
4) Boot from the Acronos 10 bootable CD and use the "Add new drive" tool to format the target drive so its got the same drive structure as my original system.
5) Use the Acronis True Image boot CD environment to do the restore.

Hope this makes sense to you. Having tried it, I have found that True Image says it can't find any hard drives on the system!?!?

The two hard drives are both connected for data and power, BIOS can see them, so do you have any ideas why True Image on the CD can't? Anything to do with the hard drives being on SATA channels 1 and 2, and the optical drive being Primary Master on the IDE bus??

Any words of wisdom much appreciated.

If the normal version 10 Rescue CD will not see the drives, most likely due to age difference between the software and the new drives. Return to your registration page and look at what is available for download on your version 10. Do you also have a bootable media option which can be downloaded? If yes, this is an alternate Linus based Cd which can be downloaded and then burnt as an image on a CD. This alternte has different drivers.

It sounds like you are using the correct sequences.
1. Install the target in its iintended boot position. Boot from the Rescue CD.
2. Perform the Restore from a prior full disk backup.
3. Shutdown
4. Disconnect the source drive
5. Boot with only the new restored drive attached.

If you perform a disk option restore using version 10, you can expect that the extra space will be unallocated and later you can use other free software to allocate the free space to other partitions.

If you want to restore using Partition Restore with Resize which can allocate all space, check out item 3-B inside my signature index below.

Hello grover H- very many thanks for that useful reply which I have just seen... Its about half past ten here at the moment so I'll look forward to following up on what you say tomorrow.

All the best- I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers for now,

Mark

PS- apologies to you Grover H- I hadn't clocked that it was you who replied to my first posts... so thanks for that too!

Hello again-

...And here I am on Monday morning writing this from my machine which is now newly equipped with its bigger, faster, quieter hard drive.

Grover- your guidance in article 3B was informative and useful, and indeed there was an updated ISO image for the boot CD on the Acronis website which allowed me to get onto my machine and do the necessary. Just as well to sort this before a real disk failure and emergency backup...

So I ran through the procedures as necessary to transfer my system with the partitions resized and it all worked flawlessly.

I finished off by doing a backup from Windows then verifying it while running from tthe boot CD, and everything checked out OK so I guess I don't need to worry on that score.

Faith and hope is restored! And I'll stay away from DiskWizard in future.

Most impressed with your assistance on this, all the best to you guys at the other end of this text box-

Cheers for now, and all the best,

Mark Hanson, Scotland.

Mark,
Thank you for the feedback. It is always nice to know that something works and time invested by you and I was worthwhile. Good luck with your backups and restores.
