Disk backup fails
I have been 100% unable to complete a single disk backup using True Image 2013. I am running Windows 8 Enterprise. I have attached my most recent backup log and my report from AcronisReport.exe.
I ran chkdsk C: /r as stated in previous posts. chkdsk responds with:
-----
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) y
This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.
-----
I restart the computer and chkdsk runs briefly (two seconds at most), saying it has corrected all errors. I still get the same problem from True Image, and AcronisReport.exe still reports errors on the disk.
I ran the Windows UI disk repair utility (from Disk Management) and I received a message saying "You don't need to scan this drive. We haven't found any errors on this drive. You can still scan the drive for errors if you want." I scan it anyway and am given the message that "no errors were found." AcronisReport.exe *STILL* says there are errors on the disk.
I am getting unbelievably frustrated with this considering how much money I spent and how long it takes to actually fail while backing up.
I am out of ideas.

shadowsports, thanks for the reply.
I'm using TrueCrypt as the boot loader for password protection, but the disk itself is unencrypted. (I've deferred encrypting the disk until I can get a working disk backup.)
I will re-attempt the backup via bootable media. If that fails, I'll attempt to see if I can find any UEFI/Secure Boot settings in my CMOS and try again. If this works, we'll consider this complete. If not, I'll reply here again with any errors I receive.

Just wanted to give an update. My disk backup from the bootable True Image 2013 CD I made has been running for the past ~10 hours and is currently reporting anywhere between 11 and 14 hours remaining with the progress bar around 20% complete. Obviously, there have been no errors thus far, but I'll find out tomorrow (perhaps) when I wake up. I don't remember exactly at what point the failures happened before; all I remember is that they were *hours* in to my backups.
I checked my CMOS settings before booting in to the TI2013 CD, and I do, in fact, have UEFI. However, this wasn't an issue as far as booting the TI2013 CD was concerned. Might it have been an impact in the disk copy itself?

jvstech,
If the back up completes... I would recommend performing a validation on the image before placing trust in its integrity. May be wise to mount/browse it for files as well.
I doubt you will get a back up in windows until the dirty flag can be cleared. Your report doesn't indicate bad blocks. The volume is marked dirty with a file system error.
Give this a try. Open the TrueCrypt interface and right-click on your WD disk, C: volume and select repair file system. See if this removes the flag. I'm looking at the TrueCrypt website now and it states windows chkdsk can dameage the file system on a disk or volume where truecrypt has been or is being used currently.
Have you thought about running datalifeguard diag on the drive? I realize this is time consuming, but thus far chkdsk has not been able to fix the problem. It might be helpful to analyze/confirm the integrity of the disk. Pay particular attention to its SMART attributes. If nothing else you will have confirmed the disks health. If the disk tests healthy, you'll know where you stand.

I'm not sure how much effort you are interested in spending on this.

Well, this morning my backup is sitting at ~50% complete with anywhere between 14 and 20 hours remaining.
As soon as it finishes, I'll download the data lifeguard tools and give them a run. If it comes to the point of buying a new hard drive, I'd like to know that's my only option left.

I seriously doubt your drive needs to be replaced. Its too early to tell, but this looks like a software/file system problem at this point .
Testing should confirm this.

Also, is the "E" in report.txt indicative of a file system error (as opposed to a bad block or bad sector)? I wasn't aware Windows would even use the drive without reformatting it if there were a file system error.

My gut feeling is that this is only a file system error. Typically chkdsk is used to resolve or repair this. In this case chkdsk has been unsuccessful for whatever reason or the problem continues to reappear. Neither windows or Acronis has indicated bad blocks. In many cases, file system errors will not keep you from using the system. Often they keep you from using an application or may keep you from performing functions within the OS. If the disk tests healthy you can decide what you want to do. Remove truecrypt. Attempt more aggresive file system repair, etc.

I have an interesting development. Well, rather, it's interesting to me but may not be so in the scheme of what has happened so far.
The bootable TI2013 disk backup succeeded some time last night. I restarted my computer this morning and chkdsk starts again as Windows is booting. This time, however, it is taking much longer. It's been running for 45 minutes and is only 29% complete. So perhaps the last issue with chkdsk not finding anything was just a fluke.
As soon as it finishes, I'll validate the disk backup and run DLG.

Sitting at hour FOUR of this chkdsk after rebooting it for freezing at 29%; still at 29% on this run, still a lot of disk activity. I guess I'll check it after I get back home from work tonight, but it would definitely appear that this is not a True Image issue anymore. If I can't get this thing to finish, I'm going to boot in to a live Linux distro and run fsck.ntfs on the drive.
I'm about ready to buy the largest SSDs I can' find and just move to that.

Allow chkdsk to complete.

As I stated in my first post... this is a windows issue, not Acronis. Hopefully your file system errors can be repaired and the disk will test healthy.
SSD's aren't without their own problems, but I have to say I am extremely pleased with their reliability and performance. Larger drives still cost an arm and a leg in comparison to their spinnining counterparts. (grin)

Yes. I wasn't trying to make it sound like I was skeptical of your assertion. Rather, I was just reaffirming that fact. Sorry for the miscommunication. I greatly appreciate the help so far.

You're kind. I didn't feel like you were directing that comment at me. Just looking out for Acronis. They've got some really great products. I'll look forward to the next update.
