"A disk read error occured"

Thread needs solution

My laptop is hp compaq nx8420.

I cloned my old hard drive(hitachi) to new one(westerndigital).
After putting the new drive into my laptop, there was no problem for about 3 weeks.
One day, I turned on my power switch of my laptop and the black screen said "A disk read error occured press alt+ctrl+del". I took the hard drive(westerndigital) out and put my old one(hitachi) again into my laptop, and it works perfect. I can access to my new hard drive(wd) thruogh USB. But it does not boot my laptop.

I saw several threads regarding this problem, but I could not find how to solve this problem exactly, if it is solvable.

Somebody help me out here?!?!

Hello gru han,

Welcome to the Acronis Forum and thank you for your post. I will do my best to help you.

The error message - A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart has a couple of reasons, from hardware to software to BIOS.

I would recommend this Microsoft KB article and this general thread.

You can also try fixing the MBR manually, please check our KB article for instructions and you can also try using Windows installation disk to check your hard drive for errors (chkdsk /r).

If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Thank you.
