Disk recovery did not recover exact partition size

Thread needs solution

I made a full backup of a drive with 2 partitions on it. This backup is located on a 2TB drive with partitions at 880GB and the other partition at 45GB.

The restore from backup i chose disk mode and put it on a new TB drive. It worked, but for some reason the new partitions size is 886GB and 45.3GB. Why did it do that? I selected the check box for disk signature as well.

Adnan,

A disk restore using 2011 will proportionately resize the partitions as it did in your situation.

Instead of choosing the disk option, you can restore the partitions individually and during the process, you can resize the partition according to your preferences.

When booted from the Rescue CD, choose your backup file and when selecting what is to be restored,
1. select all partitions but do not select MBR or Recover disk signature.
2. during this phase, change the partition size if you wish. BE sure the partition chosen to be active is the correct partition. Also be sure and restore in the correct partition sequence as displayed by your Windows Disk Management graphical view.
3. resize the next partition.
4. Select the target disk and proceed with the restore.
5. After completion, do not reboot but return to main menu and reselect same backup image.
6. This time, select only the MBR and after choosing the target disk, also select the "Recover Disk Signature" option and press proceed.
7. Shutdown and Boot with only the new disk attached.

For a little preview, you can click on my signature link below (yellow highlite) and look at items #3-BB.

It might also help us to better understand your configuration if you were to post a picture of your old disk as shown in Windows Disk Management graphical view.

Disk 0 is the backup it is an acronis secure zone made drive. Will a previous true image not resize the disk? Why does it do it anyways, i have used norton ghost to do disk backups and it doesnt. I also used acronis to make a disk backup and it did not do it. But when restoring it from a backup image is when it does it.

I appreciate the workaround for it. But that means i have to calculate since it wont let me put 880GB i have to put say 903990 to = the 880, that was just a guess. When i initially created these partitions i did that and made them the exact size i wanted which i have now. But if i have a crash and have to restore, it makes it harder for me.

Its not a big deal that it does it, but its rather annoying and they heck cant it just do a direct restore. geez

So this proggy is weird. I loaded up my OS and went to recover the small partition of 45GB onto a usb drive to test that i can make it my own size. I selected the size of 45GB onto the usb drive, it created it and the actual size is 120GB with 112GB free.

I deleted the partition and did it again, same thing. Is there another alternative to this software, cause this is not working for me?

went back to 2010 and it worked fine. whos retarted idea was it to change it. its common sense i want my partition to be the same size. sometimes people need to leave well enough alone. im staying with 2010 for a few yrs now because of them changing things for worse
