Disk size

Thread needs solution

I have a W7 system with two internal 2TB hard disks. If I buy True Image 2013, how big should my external disk be, considering I am very unlikely to fill both internal disks? Does a disk image include all the empty space, or does it just refer to it by position and size? I am keen to avoid buying a larger (and more expensive) backup disk than I really need. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Disk/partition backups backup only sectors in use, and data are compressed. So, 500 GB of used disk space could result in a backup of perhaps 250 GB -300 GB.

I use two 1 TB external HDs (in rotation, one in use at a time) to backup my 750 GB HD on my system. I always do full disk backups, but often exclude music files (.mp3, .alac, etc.) so that imaging is faster and images smaller. I backup music files separately using Robocopy.
