"Download Windows client"?

Thread needs solution

On the following page:

https://obstorage.acronis.com/help.htm#backing_up

... in the "What to do if you want to back up to Acronis Online Storage" section ... it is stated:

"When you receive the confirmation e-mail message, download a standalone version of Acronis Online Backup program by selecting Download Windows client in the main menu. Install the downloaded program and back up your data to Acronis Online Storage."

Where am I supposed to find this "Download Windows client"? What program's or Web page is this "main menu" supposed to exist on?

My requirements are not really difficult but I am having a hard time getting this done. I don't want to image the drives as I am going to wipe them clean later and install Windows 7 (from XP) - so I am intent on only backing up specified folders and files (And hopefully eliminating duplicates along the way). I set up a 50 GB online storage account, added a Personal Vault, set up a "Scheduled" Online Disk Backup to make a copy of certain folders and files from my F:\ drive, tried to find a way to Run it Now but had trouble with that, finally trying to "Schedule" it to run 15 minutes in the future but it never kicked off. (Along the way, maybe before I knew to Subscribe to an online account to begin with ... my first attempt at a backup created the backup on my F:\ drive, until it ran out of space; I deleted that *.tib file). This morning ... at 9:55 AM, I THINK (if I've got the sequence right), I went to TI Home 2010, selected the failed backup item that was scheduled, and clicked Cancel - that I believe actually kicked off the backup request if that makes sense ... or maybe I just clicked to Manual from Automatic? Or right-clicked and clicked 'Run'? ... though I think that option was greyed out. Anyway, the archive has been growing since. When I now go to the "https://obstorage.acronis.com/index.htm?" page, I can see the two main folders from my F drive created in my Online back up (with now some 997 MB of files & growing) ... however, I can't see any files in these folders. Sometimes when I click to drill down in these folders, I get a message: "Online Web Restore is currently unavailable. Please try again later." Is this normal when the backup is still running?

I know I've asked several questions here but I'm hoping someone can help me make sense of this ... and what I have to do.

Thanks,

Jeff

Just posting this "comment" so I can check the "Notify me when new comments are posted" box ...

The 'Windows Client' sounds like a new gizmo to me.

There was a strange and IMHO some what pointless curtailed beta test, of the web interface for recovery of files, which this 'help' text seems to be alluding to. I can only guess there is an extra program that may or may not have been separately tested which is this Windows Client.

As it say in the file - you register for OLB access and they send you a link for the utility. Unless they are going to offer the OLB commercially to people who don't have a copy of True Image I can't quite see the point of it at this stage.

From your description it sounds like you clicked buttons all over the place :) which I'm sure is not quite so.

Can you post some screen shots showing what you've done so far?

I can't quite see how clicking on OLB created a tib file, but I suggest deleting any tasks that you have for the moment, this includes unscheduled tasks so that you can start again from a knowm baseline.

Can you see your OLB files from within TI?

Hi Colin and thanks for posting. I've posted a few screen shots: one from the TI Home 2010 app itself, one from the Online Web Page and one from the Browse button on the TI Home 2010 app ... all while the Backup is still ongoing ... not sure if that helps or not ... The view from the "Browse" button DOES show actual files showing up (yea ...) but they're not yet visible from the Web page itself ... is that normal while a backup is in process? Will they show up on this page when the backup is done:

https://obstorage.acronis.com/index.htm?

Thanks!

Jeff

My access to OLB has been withdrawn so I can't 'test' any theories for you.

It would be correct that whilst files are being transferred to the server, they won't show up in real time. They should show up if you refresh the page, though I'm no longer certain whether this might be after TI has re-indexed the page or not. Refresh can be a simple as clicking back and forth on a folder rather than an F5 or complete browser refresh.

From TI itself then I'm pretty sure it needs to re-index it's system file (a hidden XML file on your PC) before it becomes available to view.

Just out of interest, I'd be very interested to know what happens if you try and recover a .txt or a .doc file.

Actually, I have also downloaded a trial copy of "Acronis Backup & Recovery 10" and may have made that initial (partial) backup with that ...

I opened several files from the second backup of selected files from my F drive ... so that seems to be working ...

But then I got the message that my next two Acronis TI Home 2010 Backups failed with a 'Request timeout expired' error (for which no Help or KB info is available) - see attached screen shot ... and another with:

"Event Codes: 0x00640005
Make sure the archive is not open, mounted or used by a different process. Reattempt the operation"

I've got to say this is NOT a very user-friendly application. Could really do with a Quick Start Guide ... and I'm saying that after having spent about a day and a half wrestling with it ...

Is ABR10 still installed on your system?

Something was accessing the drive when TI wanted to use it.

Can you run more than one backup at the same time? Or sequentially cue several jobs for one to run after the previous one completes?

Jeff

You might have been unlucky in that ABR was locking the disk at the same time as TI tried to access it. If you are running W7, then it is possible one fo W7's background tasks is/was grabbing access.

If you have a stack of tasks to start at the same time, then TI will run each one sequentially.

If you want to run a task on condition that a previous one has completed then you'll need to use a script of some kind. Windows Task Scheduler might be able to do this.

I can't recall if ABR10 has this ability built in.

What happens to an ongoing Backup operation if it is suspended, and I reboot the PC? Will it pick up where it left off?

Also, when I right-click on the ATI Home icon in the System Tray, change Priority to High, and then immediately check it again, it is back to Normal ... Any ideas about that?

Thanks,

Jeff

No it will be left in an incomplete state, though the temporary file is normally deleted as it is held in RAM rather than on the actual drive until imaging has completed.

To my knowledge this has never worked from the tray monitor. Only from the task options.

-- Man, that is really sucky ... first it takes so long to upload a file (I started the backup of a 5.9 GB file around ~ 9 a.m. ... it says it now needs " 1 day 4 hours" to finish ... and then if I have other problems leading me to think a re-boot is in order ... I can't do it without losing the time I've already invested and starting over again? What about if some of the "issues" I'm having elsewhere on the PC might have somehow corrupted the process ... like a little while ago, I had other apps losing functionality that made me think Explorer had gone to sleep again ... I had to restart it to keep going ... how do I know if either the issues or the restart of Explorer might have affected the backup ... and maybe it's in a never-ending loop (I've got to wait for "1 day 4 hours" to find that out?). Don't get me wrong - I'm just venting ... surprised at what this app seems to lack. I notice the ABTI system tray icon has disappeared ... now.

Jeff

What does the "Suspend" button in the attached screen shot do? I couldn't find any documentation on it ...

Sorry I gave you false information. You said 'backup' and my mind changed to disk imaging, not OLB!!

I don't know what happens with OLB in this respect. I think there is a indexing file, so what you have backed up would be there, but it would'nt autorestart - though Non Stop Backup does restart.

I wouldn't recommend having ABR10 and TI Home installed together, the differences between them is enough to cause them to interfere with each other.

I don't know about the suspend button either, I don't think v5055 or previous builkds had that.

I assume it stops the uploading and can then continue at a later date. Whether this is only valid for a current session is the big question - does it survive a reboot of the PC or closing TI down and re-opening?
