Dual Boot

Thread needs solution

Hello,
I am looking how to dual boot an (already installed) W7 (64b) and the ISO image of TrueImage 10 or 11 ???.
Many thanks to detail step by step the installation.
This is to avoid to have a cd on a Portable PC (I do not use the True IMAGE installation to limit the disk space usage).
Many thanks for any answer.

Jean,
You could consider using the method here: http://themudcrab.com/acronis_grub4dos.php

Thanks Pat for your answer, this solution seems to be very interesting, but there is no reference to Windows Seven (64b), only XP and Vista are cited....
Any experience ??
Jean

Grub4DOS will install just fine from Windows 7 x64. Use the same installation instructions as Vista. I have several PCs set up this way.

If you use the link to the instructions by MudCrab, you only need to do Sections I and III. Section 2 is not used if 3 is used.

an overview is to
1. Make the flashdrive or usb disk bootable via the Grub4Dos instructions.
2. Copy the iso onto the flash drive for either 10 or 11 or both into a folder in this example names as Grub4Dos
3. Create a menu entry into the MENU. LST file pointing to the iso storage folder such as

title ATI (v10-4942)
map --mem (hd0,0)/!Grub4Dos/v10-4942.iso (hd32)
map --hook
chainloader (hd32)
boot

title ATI (v11-8101)
map --mem (hd0,0)/!Grub4Dos/v11-8101.iso (hd32)
map --hook
chainloader (hd32)
boot

Hello,
This setup just works fine, many thanks to everybody...
Just some precisions:
I tried an old 512Mb usb flashdrive (as the TrueImage ISO file is les than 300 Mb), and Grubdos did not want to use it...???
An old 2Gb usb flash drive works fine...
Any other way to have another solution: A real "Dual Boot" on my C: hard drive ???
Thanks for any answer...

Yes, I use an app called EasyBCD for this: it results in an OS bootmenu whereby I can select W7, WXPProx64, or ATIH2010. This last actually boots an acronis.iso file that is on another hard drive in my PC.

Of course, if your C: drive goes south this doesn't work, but for me I like being able to Restart my PC to the ATI .iso disk and make image backups w/o relying on the snapshot manager which I've always been leery of. FWIW I suspect it has Grub4DOS embedded somewhere to perform its magic. I've also used XBOOT which is a variation on the theme. All good tools to have on the workbench.

Jean:

Yes, it's quite simple. Follow the same procedure that you did for a flash drive but instead install to your hard drive.

If you clean the 512 MB flash drive first you may have more success. Try this: http://themudcrab.com/acronis_diskpart.php Although the article mentions Vista's diskpart, the command is also included in Windows 7.

Hello, Tomf and Mark,
Many thanks for all your advices.
Mark, Diskpart did the tricks, and my 512 Mb USB flash-drive is working now with Grub4dos (Thanks to MudCrab).
Tomf, you are right, if the C: drive become not bootable, there is no way to recover (with a dual boot)...., I will stay with the Flash-drive...
Many thanks again to everybody for your help.
Regards
Jean
