suppose i create an image (xp 32, for example) on an hdd and i want to copy that image onto another medium -- either another hdd, a usb thumb, or a sequence of dvd's.

how is this done?

You can copy this file (almost) like any other file. I added "almost" because an archive file contains internal checksums to ensure the integrity (not fidelity) of the archive. We have see some simple OS copy corrupt archive files.
To avoid that, you can use some file comparison tool, or you can ask ATI to validate the file after it is copied. If you validate, ATi will add the file to the backup list and show it as a non active task.

If you use the move backup command within ATI, this will move the existing files and the destination of future backups to the new destination.

If you manually move (not copy) a backup file, ATI will lose track of it. This doesn't prevent recoveries if the backup chains are preserved.

One way to do things is to clone, which make one hdisk have the same image as another. So with one target disk you get one image.
Another way is to backup a disk; this stores the disk image in a file (with the ext "tib"), which, besides the several properties Pat pointed out, can be placed on a drive along side as many other backup files as will fit.

If you clone from a to b; you can clone from b to c to d to. . . .
If you backup a to b, you can restore the backup to any disk and do this any number of times.
