Email backup leaving Outlook in unstable state

I frequently find, after having run an Email Backup, that Outlook insists on checking my mail (.pst) file for integrity before allowing me into the application. This happens so frequently that it is becoming a nuisance. It may be that it is correlated with instances of the backup not completing for some reason, thought I am unsure on that point. In any case, I would have thought that a cancelled job should still not leave the data file in an unusable state.
Can anyone suggest a solution that doesn't involve not using Email Backup?
