Error messages during backup

Thread needs solution

Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate, latest updates / 64 bit / Corei7 3.2 / 12 gig ram / plenty of HDD space

I am attempting to back up two large files in one tib. According to the time info on the backup time to back up is in the 4-5 hour range, so I am running the backup after I go to bed. Upon checking progress, I see an error message that Acronis cannot back up a given file and gives a few click options. I click skip or whatever the option is to disregard.
My question are these:
* Does the backup process stop when the error message appears?
* If so, is there a work around to keep the backup process going?

Was this a file backup, rather than a disk/partition backup?

It may have failed, it really depends on the specifics.
If the file was locked by some Windows process, ATI may have been unable to back it up. e.g. This happens often with the .PST file of MS Outlook: if Outlook is still running, ATI may be unable to back it up. It could also fail if there are disk errors.

Tuttle, thanks for your reply. The backup was for two folders full of images, graphic files, pdfs, word files, excel files, etc. and web sites.

My main question still is, when this error message appears, does the backup process stop until a click response is made? Or does the keep running despite the error message?

If the backup process keeps running, I can leave the backup alone and go to bed. If the backup process stops, that means I have to monitor the four to five hour back up process, to click something every time the software encounters a similar issue.

I do not run outlook on this machine.

Thanks again for your response,
Joe

Good question. I don't know the answer to that.

MS Outlook was simply an example. You may have a similar situation occurring with one of your files.

Once TI has encountered a file (in a files and folders backup) that it cannot deal with, it stops, I believe. This can be double checked by looking to see if the tib file size has increased and the latest time stamp for the tib file.

Only disk imaging can skip 'bad sectors'.

What does the task log show?

What size are the two files it gets stuck on?

Do these files have long file names or non alphanumeric characters in their name?

Are they located in sub folders, if they are, how many folders deep are they?

If the predominance of files are images and graphic files you will not get much further compression, it might help to set this task for zero compression.

If the files in question are either excluded from the backup (using the exclusions option for the task) or moved to another folder does everything complete without error?

Carrying on from Tuttle's point, are any of these files in use by a program when the backup is running, a database for example, SQL Server or similar?

Have you run a chdsk /r on this source drive?

Colin, thanks for the info. Once I began to get the errors, I shut the whole thing down, so I will start again and try to keep records.
Thanks,
Joe
