Error mounting backup - "cannot assign a drive letter to a partition...."

Thread needs solution

Acronis True Image 9.0, Build 3,854 on Win XP SP 3... Dell Inspiron

Very frustrated.... when I try to mount a backup so that I can retrieve some files, I keep getting the error message with a red X saying "cannot assign a drive letter to a partition from the backup archive". But then it does mount part of the backup on a new drive letter. ???? Why is it doing this?

I had a problem with a rootkit virus and had to format my hard drive and reinstall all my software. I do not want to do a Restore.... I just want to get my personal data off the external drive. Someone on a forum suggested right clicking and choosing expand, but all that does is show what is on the external drive... it does not allow me to copy the contents.

Can someone explain how I can get my personal data files off the external hard drive without doing a full restore.
Thanks

Are multiple partitions in the backup image? If so, are you trying to mount both of them? Some partitions can cause mounting errors (diagnostic/utility partitions, etc.) -- especially on Dell computers.

Have you tried restoring the files/folders you need from the backup?

Not sure what you mean by "multiple partitions in the backup image". I always do full backups of the whole hard drive. I just want to open one on a particular date and copy and paste some of my personal files.

If I use the restore feature won't it overwrite the folder contain on the computer now?

It's been a while, but I know that I have mounted backups in the past and retrieved what I needed, but now it doesn't work. I may try reinstalled the Acronis TI software... maybe it is corrupted. ???

I just meant to verify that only the one partition you want to mount is selected. For example, make sure that the Dell diagnostic partition is not selected.

You can select to restore the files/folders to an alternate location so they don't overwrite the original locations.

Reinstalling TI may help. You'd have to try it to find out.

Thanks MudCrab... it worked. They problem was that there were 3 partitions.... 1. EISA Fat 16 2. NTFS 3. Fat 32.... by default they were all checked so the mount failed. When I only checked the drive that I wanted the data off, it worked. Thanks again!
