"An error occurred while opening the backup archive", also obtaining version used?
I was recently supplied a .tib file from a company which required me to investigate an issue with their server. Since I didn't have Acronis True Image prior to this, I decided to purchase it since the cost seems fair and the product may be a better alternative to what we're using now.
However upon opening this file I receive the error
"An error occurred while opening the backup archive.
Cannot continue the operation because the backup is corrupted, or it is being used by another process, or you do not have enough permissions to perform the operation."
I ensured I wasn't suffering from a permissions issue reported by others.
I read other users reporting that different versions of Acronis True Image can cause this issue; if I'm using the latest version through my recent purchase, does that negate this version issue as a possibility? Is there any way to use a hex editor to determine the version they used when they created the .tib file?
The drive it was provided on was not corrupted and the client states that the image was dumped successfully so whatever the issue is, they say its on my end.
The file is a single large .tib file with no additional files, am I perhaps missing a file?
From what I read, there's no way to fix a corrupted .tib file or extract its contents?
Thanks in advance

The .tib backup file is located on my workstation. Prior to that it was also inaccessible on a healthy USB drive which was given to me by the other folks.

William,
Do you know which version of True Image was used to make the tib file?
Is it of a disk image or a files and folders backup? If a disk image you might be able to mount or explore it.
It might be part of a chain, and without the rest of the chain nothing useful can happen.
What happens if you try to access the drive from the Linux environment - the Recovery Media?
Does the file size appear as zero bytes when you view it in Windows Explorer or any other file manager?

"My workstation" meaning what? It was on a second internal drive?
External USB drives can cause corruption error messages if the connection is not solid. Don't connect via a hub, a port in a monitor, a USB extension cord, etc. Connect the external drive directly to a USB port on the rear of the computer case. See if that works better.
Also, see Colin's points.

The drive, file, and transfer did not produce a corrupt file. Let me elaborate so I don't come off as arrogant - they saved the file to another internal drive on their server, directly from their Acronis software. They copied it to a USB drive, gave me the drive, I copied the file to my system, can't open the file. Could not open the file on the USB drive either.
I then asked one of their IT people to compare the MD5 and SHA-1 of their file on their server with the file I have on my workstation and it matches. So basically, the file someone produced is the file I have.
I was told by someone at the site that this was a one-off dump of the drive which they took their server offline to produce and the software stated it was successful. I'm not sure who created it so I can't ask for specifics, all I know is that I was handed a drive with a file I didn't recognize until googling and I have this .tib file here, bought the software to read it but the software states its corrupted. I have a feeling they used an Acronis boot disc of some sort since the story was the server was offline for a few hours to create this image.
I might just go to the site and do it myself with disk2vhd but I wanted to save the drive since I have the file now.
Is there any way to determine what they used by analyzing the header of the .tib file with a hex editor?
Thanks for the responses gents!
Edit: I should also state that I'm sure this is an Acronis file of some sort not just because of the .tib extension but it also follows the naming pattern of C-Drive_full_b1_s1_v1.tib.

I did not say that the file is corrupted. I said quite the opposite.
As I said, the "corrupted" error may not mean that the file is corrupted. It simply means that True Image cannot read the file solidly. That could be caused by file errors, disk errors, connection issues, or various other things.

A sudden thought!
Did they use True Image or ABR11.5 to make the tib file? This is important, as images made by the corporate versions of the product are not able to be opened by the Home versions and vice versa. Well, not since about 2009 anyway.

The biggest problem here is that I'm dealing with a company that doesn't have a reign on their IT staff and every one of them performs individually under the management of non-IT people, so I can't really get a proper answer. For all I know someone could have used an illegitimate home version of True Image from 2005 or maybe they have a corporate license for the latest version...!
Since I was working from home this weekend and I figured I would also have a personal use for the product, I purchased a personal license for "True Image 2013" and the "Plus Pack"; However after reading your previous post and viewing the home page, it's possible I purchased a product that can't read their file...?
If they used this "Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Server" product, would my error message still be a corrupt file error?
Thanks again guys!

It is possible that this is the message you'd get. You could download the trial version of ABR11.5 Workstation, and see fi you have any luck with that. Unfortunately you can't have ABR and TI installed on the same system, so a work around could be to register the trial ABR11.5, then download the recovery ISO and see if booting from that can open the file.

Same issue here. All back-ups (done many times) come up with "An error occurred while opening the backup archive". Used to work some time ago, but now get this all the time. Seems a common problem. Does anyone know of alternative software I could try/use?

The error message may also relate to destination disk/folder not availabe (network disk not found)
also could relate if user has deleted selected tib files to reduce the size of the backup.
If backup has incremental backups as componets, no pieces can be deleted and all original tib files must still be accessible with all original pieces still in existence.

As soon as its finished "successfully" I try & open it (same PC) - and get the message.
I'm using an external hard drive (tried 3 new hard drives over the past 8 months) with a direct connection - no networks, hub, server etc involved.

You might try posting a picture of the storage folder showing the tib files sorted in Date/time order;
and identify where the storage folder is located (type of disk).
Try validating, starting with the most recent. If that fails, continue to attempt validating selecting less recent files. Perhaps you can find some less recent fies which will validate.
If you are using incremental backups, the chain numbering sequence must be sequential from the oldes to the most recent without any breaks in the numbering. All numbers must exist and all in the same folder.

I am having this problem with TI 2015. Immediately after creating the image, I tried to open it by double-clicking on it, and I get the same error as the OP. I can right-click and mount the image as a drive. This problem started in the last few weeks, but I haven't changed anything. This looks to me like a bug in TI. I have older images that I can open without any problems.
