Error reading harddisk on sector.... on volume 1 - ATI 2009

Thread needs solution

ATI 2009 says on a 4 week old NAS-harddisk (Samsung) that there is a error while reading harddisk on sector ... on volume 1, which is this NAS harddisk.

I tried 2 times checkisk over night with all buttons checked.

Still the same.

HD Tune says: Raw Read Error Rate - Current 99 - Worst 35 - Threshold 51 - Data 10.717 - Status Failed!

Is it possible, that this harddisk got damaged because we had 2 days ago a power failure? There was no electricity in our street and of course the computer was running?!

I do not know what thi Raw Read Error Rate means. Is it a hardware failure or can it be corrected?

When I press ignore on ATI 2009 the backup runs fine. Everything else is working propperly. No problems at all (untill now).

Thanks for you help!

A hard disk can fail because of power failures if a power surge occurs although this is much less likely to occur than surge protector manufactureers would have you believe. Normal power shut downs shouldn't hurt a harddisk at all; the residual energy of the spinning disk provideds enough energy to be used to park the heads in a safe zone.

Genuine Raw Read RAte Errors typically indiate a problem with the disk surface or read/write heads. Not something that can be corrected.

Harddisks are electromechanical devices, which means they will definitely enventually fail, some inidividuals earlier than others. Generally, once a harddisk starts showing more than just a couple new errors, it not only will not get better, but will continue to generate errors at an ever incrasing rate.

Hello Monti,

Thank you for using  Acronis Products

I would recommend you to check the disks for errors:

- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)

- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r" (where DISK is the partition letter you need to check) for every partition that is visible in My Computer. Please note, that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

If the issue persists update SnapAPI drivers using the following KB article.

If a backup of a drive fails to read from a sector of the disk, and you click to ignore that, will can the resulting backup be used to restore a drive?

thanks,

James

It should, but the missed data from that cluster will be in the restoration. You'd be better off in such a situation to fix the disk/file-system prob and then make a new backup.
