Explorer "Back Up" Right-click Context Menu Selection

Thread needs solution

I'm using the Acronis WD version and it lists "Back Up" as a right-click context menu selection for every file in Windows Explorer. When I click on it, a pretty Acronis splash screen comes up for 1 or 2 seconds then disappears! There is no indication however, of what it does and I can't find anything about it in the Acronis program or help files!! Very frustrating...

Anyone know why the heck this is right-click option is there? Are there any instructions about how to configure it? And if it doesn't do anything, how the heck can I get rid of it? I already have way to many entries on my explorer right-click context menu and don't need another one, especially if it doesn't do anything.

Thank you for your help with this,

Wade:

If you want to eliminate the right-click context menu entry then open the Registry Editor and delete the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C539A15A-3AF9-4c92-B771-50CB78F5C751}

I agree with you about right-click context menus. If every program that you install would add one or two of these then the menu would become so large and cluttered that it would become useless. I wish programmers would ask (during installation) if you wanted these or not.

Thanks for responding Mark, the registry tweak worked just fine.

Regarding the context menu item, the handling of this by Acronis seems very unprofessional to me. I'm guessing the "feature" was simply not properly implemented in the WD edition. I appreciate that the WD edition is free (for these with WD USB drives), but I shouldn't have to go to a user forum to get information about a context menu item that throws up a flash screen with no hints as to what or whether it's even doing anything! They should have left this "feature" off of the WD version or at least explained the dysfunction in a read-me or help file.

I really want to like Acronis but this issue has taken up a bunch of my time leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I appreciate your help,
Wade

Wade:

The context menu works as expected in the full version of the program. I suspect one of two things may be going on. First, since the WD edition is a stripped-down version of the full program, perhaps when Acronis was removing features they forgot about removing this key. Or second, maybe the program never installed properly for you. Repeating the installation may fix it. However, if you reinstall the program it will put back the above registry key and you'll have to remove it again if you don't want the context menu item.

Thanks Mark, My guess is your first suspicion is the correct one. Anyway, I think I'll just leave well enough alone for now!
