Failed to add the backup to the backup list - Acronis True Image Home 2011

Thread needs solution

When I try and 'add' a .tib file to the backup list (via browse for backup) I receive the following error message ----- "Failed to add the backup to the backup list". Then I have to click "ignore". The file does not get added. I use Windows 7.

I think (not sure) that I may have earlier renamed the physical file on the harddrive. In any case I can browse for it and select it it just fine. It just won't add to the backup list. The file is real and contains 60 GBytes of data.

Thanks

Mark,

Can you validate the file from right click on the image, archives, validate? Does it add to the backup list after validation?

I finally got a hold of Acronis and they have concluded that my file is corrupt because I cannot validate it nor mount it

I think I did rename the file and cannot remember what the previous name was. So that may be the real problem.

Yes, you cannot rename files manually with ATI, because ATi users an internal database that tracks where it puts its files, but there is no mechanism to sync with what is on the disk.
If you want to rename a backup file, use the move backup function.

Thanks for the feedback. If there is no way to sync up the file with the database then what is the purpose of - adding backup file to list function? That function permits the user to use the browse fucntion to searchn and locate the .tib file.

You can add files to the database (by browsing or executing a backup), but once it is in the database, there is no way for ATI to update its database if you make changes in Windows explorer (for example if you move a TIB file, rename it, or delete it).

Unfortunately, ATI doesn't even check if the files are still there (like iTunes would do, showing missing files with an exclamation mark). You will find out for sure when you restore, and then it is often too late, or messy to track down what ATI is looking for.

But why can't I - 1) rename the file using Explorer 2) then add it the database (via browsing) by adding it to the backup list? Wouldn't step 2 update the database ?

Wouldn't 'validate' resolve the issue in your 2nd paragraph?

I have a hunch that there is some information in the TIB file that ATI reads when you try to add to the backup list. Although you change the file name in Windows, the information inside the file might point ATI to an archive in its database that says the file is already tracked, so ATI doesn't add it. The reason why I am guessing this is that, when you add an incremental file to the list, it doesn't show as an additional file. Nothing happens, because the whole chain is already showing. I may be completely off...

Why is it that 2015 can see the tib file when I plug the same disk onto my windows 8 add it to the list using the add perfectly well but on my windows 7 machine it cannot and add just makes the browser window disappear with no effect on the list.
This has to be a bug but this company takes no responsibility for faults as far as I can see. It looks as if the far cheaper backup program from Ashampoo while slower was at least reliable and trustworthy.

If that is the case it needs a clear list function or faults once occurred are permanent. It also does not explain why mine works in windows 8 but not 7 for a very similar situation where the change is in drive label only as the drive could be f or g depending on the order of plugging in.
