Failed clone leaves dead destination disk

Tried to clone boot HDD to external (USB) HDD with TI 2010 on Win 7 machine. Received a read error and clone operation hung. External HDD was unusable afterwards. It was fine before attempting the clone. Connecting the drive to brought the machine to its knees. Was finally able to see it in Disk Management window, but format attempts fail and attempts to delete the bad volume return "File not found" error. Can I salvage the HDD?
