"Failed to read from the sector" during backups

Thread needs solution

Hi. I have Acronis running automatic nightly backups and have started receiving a new error message:

"E000101F4: Failed to read data from the disk. Failed to read from the sector 26,505,503 of the hard disk 1"

If I click "Ignore," Acronis goes on to complete the backup.

I'm running Acronis 11.0 (build 8.101) and Vista Ultimate SP2.  I have 2 hard disks - a 1TB split into 2 partitions (one for OS, one for storage) and a 2TB for backups.  They are both only a few months old.

Does anyone know how to fix this error?  Thanks in advance!

Hello Jesse,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

Please do the following to fix the issue:

1) Download SnapAPI update

Unpack the archive and run the SnapAPISetup.msi file;

Go through the wizard screens and hit Proceed to install the update.

Reboot the computer to complete the changes.

2) Please check the disks for errors:

- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r"
where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that
checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

If the issue still persists, please download Acronis Report utility available here and run it, create a report and attach to your post.

This would provide us with detailed information on the hard disk partition structure.

Thank you.

Thanks for the help! I followed your instructions and I'm not getting the message anymore. However, I have one more problem... I use Backup Locations so my incremental images don't consume my entire backup drive. However, when I reach the size quote I get the message:

W00640094: The violation of backup location quota has been detected! Do you want to continue the backup process?

The backup then stalls and waits for me to click "Yes" before adjusting the Backup Location to fit within the size quota. This takes a _long_ time and defeats the purpose of scheduling my backups overnight since my computer is then working on this task all morning long. Is there any way to automatically have Acronis continue the backup process without prompting me to say "Yes?"

Thanks again!

I tried your sugestions and no luck.

I am trying to get an image backup of my system drive. I continue to get Failed read sector msgs. If I say ignore it gives the same for another sector.

I ran CHKDSK, I tried running from the boot CD, I tried creating a boot cd and running it from there (per the chat support lady), I did the snapapi thing.... No luck. When I ran from the boot cd I got TEXT_LINEX_ERROR_COMMON_DIRECT_RW_FAILED (0x590001)
SECTOR '10,663,619'

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello all,

Thank you for posting your questions, I will be happy to help.

Jesse,

I would recommend you two things:

1) Please enable Silent mode (Do not show messages and dialogs while processing option) in Default backup options (Tools -> Options -> Default backup options -> Error handling -> Tick the appropriate box)

This feature was mainly designed for unattended backups when you cannot control the backup process.

2) If this doesn't help, I would recommend you to edit the Backup Location in the following way:

  1. Use Windows Explorer to browse for the existing Backup Locations directories. Manually delete configuration files (*.cfg) from them.

  2. Run "regedit" command from Start -> Run and search for the following key:

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Acronis\Fomatik\PlaceBrowser\FavoritePlaces
  3. Delete all existing subkeys under FavoritePlaces:

Recreate Backup Location in the same folder where it was before and you had there backup archives, they will show up in Backup Location. The issue should be resolved.

Please let us know the results, we should be sure that the program runs flawless for you.

Kevin,

Most probably your hard drive contains file system errors or bad blocks. Please download Acronis Report utility available here and run it, create a report and attach the file to your next post. Please compress the Acronis Report output file into an archive (e.g. with WinZip) and attach to your message by browsing for the archive. We will check the health of your hard drive.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Please let me know if the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question.

Thank you.

Dear Oleg,

I am having the same E000101F4: Failed to read data from the disk. I have run MemTest86+-4.00 ISO & Western Digital Diagnostics all showing the memory & disks pass.

I have run the chkdsk /r and have extensive data & pictures of the Acronis error for your review & Acronis Report.

HOW DO I SEND without uploading for public view?

Just installed the SnapAPI update & will run a backup tonight. I run incremental backups daily & to external drives once per week. Most problems are on my "E" with Thunderbird Archive large files.

Please advise your thoughts as the computer manufacturer thinks it is an Acronis software issue and not hardware related.

Thanks!

Art

Dear Art,

I have requested the necessary diagnostic files in this thread.

Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is unclear or you need a further assistance.

Thank you.

i upgraded to Acronis 2010. I have a small per-to-peer network. My main computer has a C and a d drive. All data is on d drive, which I back up to an external drive.

Acronis 2010 some how locks the c and d drives such that they can not be accessed fron any other computer on nertwork. That main computer can see other network drives, but none of the other computers can get into the c or d drive on the main computer. The minute I uninstall Acronis 2010, the drives are again accessable. I tried this 3 times with same result. A reboot does not help. Please help!

Hello James!

Thank you for finding time to report about the issue. I entirely understand your question and I'm positive we have a solution for it. Please kindly check this article, it contains the detailed description of the reason and a solution of the issue.

I also wanted to ask you to please note that for separate issues you need to create separate threads. This one relates to the cases when you receive "Failed to read from the sector" error during the backup, and accessibility of the machine is a separate case. Submitting separate threads speeds up the process of handling greatly.

I would appreciate if you could kindly let me know whether the issue got resolved. And do not hesitate to contact us should you need any further assistance.

Thank you!

I had a similar issue and I almost gave up with "TEXT_LINEX_ERROR_COMMON_DIRECT_RW_FAILED (0X590001)" error. I've read all these different suggestions about trying to ISOLinux boot image or downgrading ATI version and chkdsk /r and even using the hard drive manufacturer disk utility. It turns out I did a have bad sector that none of these software caught and luckily I had an old copy of SpinRite. Ran it, it found that 1 bad sector, then I ran chkdsk one more time for safe measures and finally chkdsk found the bad sector, then I ran ATI one more time and backup succeeded without errors.

I'm using Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit. it doesnt allow me to make a back-up on my laptop. So I used Acronis to make it. However, I just back up only my personal files, but not my system. It said failed to read from the sector... and here is my report from the acronis report. and when i type in the cmd.exe, it said i dont have the privileges to make it or something like that. well, all I wanna do is just a back-up file =.="

You need to be an administrator to set up ATI. Are you?

Hello Oleg,

I was curious if this solution still applies being that it's been about 6 years since you posted this. I am getting a "Failed to read from sector..." error - see attached. Should I follow the steps in this reply? My backup will complete successfully if I select 'Ignore All' but that's not a great long term fix.

Thank you!
Beth

Beth,

If you are referring to the download and install of the snapapi module then yes that would still apply.
Running chkdsk would also be advisable.
