Failed to read the snapshot manager

Thread needs solution

Using Acronis True Image Home 2010 (build 6,053) on Win 7 x64.

All of a sudden I started getting the "Failed to read the snapshot manager" error.
If I click, "Ignore" the BU works but I have no idea if it is any good.
Windows 7 image backup works fine.

Please see attachments for the exact error message and the Acronis report I ran.

I have cleaned the registery, run chkdsk (no errors) and installed the SnapAPI drivers.
Nothing works.

I have tried to backup to a USB drive and a local drive. Both give the same error.
I have not made any system updates or changes to my C drive other than installing some user applications.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this problem.

Failed to read the snapshot errors generally indicate an issue with the hard drive or with Acronis low-level driver called SnapApi which are responsible for disk operations. Since your reports check out, I can recommend the following solution that will resolve this problem.

1. Please install the latest build of Acronis True Image 2010 Home - 7046. We have a SnapApi update which needs to be applied on build 7046.

2. Install the SnapApi update (I will send you a private message with instructions in a few minutes)

3. If this fails to work, please collect this report and contact our Support team so that we can investigate this issue.

I'm having the same problem and reviewing this page http://kb.acronis.com/content/1512 it says:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} -> snapman string in the UpperFilters value
Windows\system32\snapapi.dll
Windows\system32\drivers\snapman.sys

I see that my system did not have snapapi.dll in \windows\system32 --> I have since copied it from a shared \Program Files\Acronis... directory.
I also see that my system did not have snapman in HKLM\System...\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} in the UpperFilters, rather it had it in the LowerFilters field.

So, before I find myself unable to boot or somesuch, is it correct for me to have:
1) Copied the snapapi.dll into windows\system32 and
2) Add snapman to the UpperFilters param for {71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} (Do I remove it from LowerFilters?)

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting. I will definitely help you with this issue.

In the latest build of Acronis True Image 2010 Home (7046) the Snap Api components are placed in the lower filters, this is normal but please do not delete nor add anything there because this will make your system unstable.

The file snapapi.dll in \windows\system32 was used in older versions of Acronis, currently this file is located in Program Files/Common Files/Acronis/SnapApi, but it is better not to touch that file as well.

To get to the bottom of this problem, I would appreciate if you could provide me with this report, so that I can see if there are any errors on your hard drive and we will proceed from there.

I appreciate your prompt reply.

According to the report, there are some bad blocks on your hard drive. I have attached an example from your report with the volume label selected.

I would recommend the following:

1. Please run chkdsk /r on your machine.

2. Run the Acronis Report one more time, and you can either send it to me or check if there are still bad blocks on the hard drive. Simply open the report, press ctrl f and type bad. Keep clicking next until you almost reach the end, it is the hard drive without any label.

3. If there are still bad blocks, please try running chkdsk /r one more time.

4. Once they are gone, I am certain you will be able to create a succesful backup.
