Failed reboot after recovery - please help

Thread needs solution

Hi all. I hope you can help.

I recently had a problem with my Dell XPS 17 that required me to send it back to the manufacturer. Prior to doing so, I purchased Acronis True Image Home 2012 PC Backup & Recovery and an external hard drive. I installed the program, downloaded the update, and completed the backup. I then send the laptop back to Dell.

I received my computer back today. The hard drive had been replaced and seemed to work fine. I installed Acronis, downloaded the updates and attempted to recover my data from the external hard drive.

The process seemed to be working, and prompted me to reboot. When it did, I got the following error message:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, then click "next"
3. Click "repair your computer"

...

Status: 0xc000000f
Info: the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

Dell is sending me the USB key with windows 7. They tried to help me over the phone but we were unable to fix the problem. I am very disappointed because I don't know what I did wrong.

Has anyone here encountered this problem? Any idea how to fix it? Is my data gone? What did I do wrong.

Sincere thanks to all who reply.

It is possible that your backup didn't include all the partitions necessary. There are hidden partitions on computers that need to be included in the backup. If you are an advanced user and know exactly what these partitions are, you can be more selective. But for the majority of users, the safest way is to include all partitions (in fact, when you create the backup, you should switch to the disk mode and select the entire disk). Many users just backup the C:\ partition, and this is not enough.

You should still be able to mount the image in Windows and retrieve the user files that you have backed up.

Thank you so much for replying. Unfortunately I can't try it out until I get the windows.7 usb key from dell. When that happens, I'll put up a new post. I think you may be right, I may have backed up the C drive only.

I have almost the same problem, but I'm sure, that my archive include not only disk C:, but also 100mb system disk and it has not my 3rd disk (D). I don't now Acronis version but when I tried to recover my system I could choose only 1 logic disk and after that - "do you want to recover another disk?" (in true image 15 i can choose all disks at the same time). At first time I chose next sequence: 1) disk C recover; 2) System disk recover >>> the same problem as in 1st post.
At second time: 1) system disk recover 2)disk C recover>>>>> Bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+del
What can be wrong???
Today I'll try to recover with last version of true image but I think that nothing will happen

You should have full HDD backup(with all logic disks) to recover your system or you should have *tib with only disk C and windows-cd to recover bootmgr

Dell sent me the windows disc. They instructed me to re-install windows. After all this hassle, I didn't bother to re-install Acronis because I don't want another crash. I think what likely happened was that I likely only backed up the C drive, because that's all I use.

Does anyone know how I can get access to my data? I'm reluctant to re-stall Acronis because I don't want my system to crash again. I'll be grateful for any assistance.

Alexander, I think I only have tib files on the external hard drive.

Andrew,

You can boot to the Acronis Rescue Media and restore data files from your backup without installing True Image on your system.

andrew,

Have you either made the recovery CD from within windows or downloaded the ISO from your Acronis account?

Assuming the CD boots your Dell OK, you will be able to recover the tib file from there.

I would first of all make a new image of your PC as it stands using the recovery CD, then even if you only nmade a partition image, you can restore just the partition image to your system and you should still be able to boot.

Thank you both for responding. I apologize for disappearing. Work got crazy and to be honest I just put my laptop away for a while because it was more stress than it was worth it. I've installed Acronis and I have my backup on an external hard drive. Last time I tried to restore, it crashed my whole system.

What I would like to do is look at the external hard drive and restore some of the files. I don't know if that's possible, because all of the files are tib files. Is there a way to do this? To be honest, I'm a total noob so I will accept whatever help I can.

Boot your computer on the recovery CD, make a full system disk backup (select the disk level).
Then, go back to "home", select recover files and folders. navigate to the backup, and recover whatever file/folder you need OR boot your computer, reinstall ACronis. You cannot install 2012 on a Windows 8 machine. After Acronis is installed in Windows, it is easy to double click on the TIB files to pick, copy/paste.
