Failed Restore now I can't boot up my computer

Thread needs solution

I downloaded a trial version of Acronis 2010. I made backups of my partitions.

When I tried to restore the C: drive partition, the program said it required reboot. Once it rebooted the restoration process began but the process happened very quickly. The green progress bar loaded in seconds!

It then rebooted once it completed and now I can't boot my computer. I just get a blinking cursor. I tried using the boot cd but all the drive letters have changed, my programs drive is now C instead of D and my original C drive has become unallocated space!

All the other drive letters have changed too!

This program has really screwed up my computer and I have been trying for days to get this fixed but without success.

My computer is a Dell Studio XPS with a SATA 750gb hard drive, and 6gb memory. My main operating system is Windows XP Pro SP3.

ANY Help on how to get this fixed would be appreciated.

Thanx for the reply. I'm still trying to get my computer working, I have a lot of work files that I can no longer access thanks to this bloody program. This is going to put me way behind schedule if I can't restore those backups.

I have tried to boot from the XP disk but I am stuck in a loop. This has stopped me accessing the recovery console and if I try to do a fresh installation it won't get passed set-up, for once it reboots I am returned to the setup screen again!!!

I have tried deleting the partion, rebuilding partitions but nothing has worked. I managed to install VISTA and from that I have finally managed to get the XP installation to run now too.

My problem now, is when I finally get XP installed, how to do I get my backups restored without acronis screwing up my computer. Since I have had to delete and rebuild partitions I am TOTALLY reliant on restoring those backups or ALL my work will have gone.

I can't run it from the boot disk because the drive letters are different there than in Windows and it won't let me restore a system partition to its original location.

When I ran restore from Windows, it did the reboot and started to run. But when the progress bar appears it races through it and the computer reboots and I am left with an unbootable computer!

I am hoping Acronis have a solution for this or I will have lost a lot of work.

your probably not in as bad as shape as you might fear.
Start by a review grover's guides 7a&b you will find detail explanation of exactly what to do and how to do it.

I presume you have the Backups on an external drive? If so, here's how I would procede.

Whichever OS (Vista or Xp) you have running on the system now, install True Image and from within Windows, use Windows Explorer to explore those Backups. Treat them like a folder - double click to open and if successful, drill down to where you have those important files. Copy them to a safe place. Applications will have to be re-installed but at least you will have your data.

Still plugging away at this computer. I have managed to get XP pro installed.

The version of Acronis I used was 2010, so the manuals you referred me to were not much use I'm afraid. I had in fact followed that procedure as I have used acronis in the past at work.

The boot disk is nothing more than worthless. It sees my drives but they have different drive letters than when viewed within Windows. I believe this is due to the boot disk using LINUX?

I was attempting to restore partitions, not the whole disk, so the partition sizes were the same as the back-up images, so there was no need to resize. The drives were listed in the correct procedure in Acronis.

I validated the images once I backed up and there are no problems with them. I have managed to rescue my work files using the browser, as DwNDrty suggested.

What I face now is installing and configuring the operating system, installing and configuring all my programs. This is gonna take forever!!!

Thanx for your help. I should have stuck with paragon. Acronis has done more damage to my computer than any virus has ever done!!!
