"Failed to start Try&Decide"

Thread needs solution

Hello All.

I am a new user of the forum and hope you will be able to help as my one month support provided with ATI 2012 Home has ended.

My PC is running W7 Pro 64bit with a single drive in two partitions (C: contains the OS and all software; D: is small and used only for some storage) there is also the obligatory hidden recovery partition set up by W7 on installation. For security I use the MS firewall, Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot S&D (Teatimer off) and Spyware Blaster.

I have not tried or used Try&Decide (or any other ATI utility) to date but have a bit of software I should like to try out. As a result I attempted to start the utility today but all I get is the title message ("Failed to start Try&Decide") at all attempts. I have looked in various places for further information as to the cause to no avail and there is nothing in the Help file to assist me.

Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem, please?

With thanks in anticipation.

Welcome John,
You've tried to start the Try & Decide feature from the Tools & Utilities tab, but receive an error "Failed To Start Try & Decide". Is there and option (button) for “More information”? Not all errors generate a code, but having one can help to determine the cause of this error.

What build # of ATIH are you using? Click Help | About True Image Home | from main menu

I also recommend that you view the windows System Event Viewer - Applications Log for additional information. More information might be needed to determine the cause.

Additionally, you can generate an Acronis System Report and post it for review by the community: http://kb.acronis.com/content/23989 - How To Generate A System Report In Windows

Try to generate it after the error occurs.

The most common causes for this error are a lack of free space on the disk or a problem between the Acronis drivers and windows drivers on the machine.

John,

Make sure that the Acronis non stop backup service (in services.msc) is turn on.
If it is:
- uninstall 2012,
- use the clean up utility here http://kb.acronis.com/content/24545
- reboot,
- launch msconfig
- go to the services tab, check all the services, then check the "hide microsoft services" options, then unselect all the remaining services,
- go to the startup tab, unselect all items,
- reboot - You are now in a "clean boot environment"
- reinstall 2012,
- reboot, and see if it works.

Many thanks for your responses.

I haven't had time to do or try everything yet, but I will post what I have.

The ATI Home 2012 is V.6154.

I have tried to generate a report, but, although I can backup my data successfully, I get the message that Acronis is not working! Could it be that it is the Utilities only that are not functioning?

I also opened Event Viewer and tried to run Try&Decide and got a result of,
"Event ID 10 — Event Filter Query Functionality.
Event Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 10
Source: Microsoft-Windows-WMI
Version: 6.1
Symbolic Name: WBEM_MC_CANNOT_ACTIVATE_FILTER
Message: Event filter with query "%2" could not be activated again in namespace "%1" because of error %3. Events may not be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected."

The above is a shortened version, I can post it in full if it helps. What this means I have no idea.

If you think I should uninstall/reinstall with this report in existence I shall do so.

I have completely uninstalled ATI using Revo Uninstaller as I was refused permission in Add/Remove (why I don't know as I am the sole user with full Administrator rights), and used the cleanup tool you linked to. I followed your advice and used msconfig and then reinstalled. I tried to start Try&Decide and it started - as yet I have not used it but stopped it again.

I attempted to generate an Acronis System Report but again got the 'not working' message.

I forgot to mention before but I have 297GB of free space on the partition I was attempting to use Try&Decide on - space would not be the cause.

One problem I now have is that ATI is not linked to any of the backups made previously. Is there a way of linking them simply or must I go through the whole lot again and backup individually?

Greetings to All,

Thank you for being here and taking the time to share your thoughts on our Forum. I highly appreciate the solutions suggested by shadowsports and Pat L.

John Andrews, I understand your concerns and apologise for the inconvenience caused on your part from the aforementioned issues. The symptoms of your issues are actually closely connected to an Upgrade installation, especially, if the version of Acronis True Image Home that is installed over, is a few versions back. Both the malfunctioning of features from Tools & Utilities, as well as, your backups not showing in the Backup List point in this direction. However, if you can provide me with more information, it will be very helpful to further prevent any issues you may face in the future.

I am glad to hear that you are able to utilise the various features from Tools & Utilities, especially the brand new Try & Decide feature in Acronis True Image Home 2012 without any further issues.

With regards to your Backups not showing in your Backup List, the same Upgrade Installation matter applies here likewise, but please be assured that it takes a few simple steps to resolve this minor issue. You simply search for your backups within the directory where they reside, and you add them to your Backup List. Please follow the step-by-step guide from our Knowledge Base article to perform this operation in a matter of minutes.

If you do encounter any other issues, or have additional questions regarding any of our products or services, please do not hesitate to write to me in person by simply sending me a PM, and I will be very glad to help with them.

Kind regards,

Hi John,

Have a look at this and see if it applies to you.

John,

Now that you have uninstall/cleaned/reinstalled, ATI has forgotten your backups. You will have to set new backup tasks. Your old backups files are still valid, they don't need to appear in the backup list for recovery, and most likely, they are orphaned (they won't be cleaned up). I recommend that you move the TIB files you want to keep to another directory, start new backup tasks afresh. When you old TIB files are old enough, simply delete them manually.

I am not sure I understood where you were on the T&D issue: is it working now? or did the issue reappear as you rebooted in normal msconfig configuration?

Hello again,

I guess I have some answers to give and a bit more information to provide. I also have another question but that I shall leave until last.

Hello Volkan,

When I purchased my new copy of ATI and installed it the first thing I did was go to the Acronis downloads site and download the build 6154 update and install it over the original copy (I'm uncertain of which build that is). As a result it would seem likely that your diagnosis is correct. I do find it a little odd though as I never experienced this type of problem upgrading within Version 8, or from this to 9, or within 9 itself. I can only presume it is an anomaly which has crept in with the new features.

The failure of the backups to appear must result from the new installation as it would not know where to 'look' even though it is supposed to 'search' for any on initial startup of the software. Everything in that area was fine prior to the re-installation process. Your link to enable browsing for them made things simple and resolved the issue.

As for the Tools & Utilities functions; I have only 'clicked' on them so far and not used any functionally. I am assuming (hopefully correctly) that as they appeared to open they will work correctly. I know that in V9 the Clone, Backup and Restore all worked as advertised, but they were the only features I had cause to use.

Please accept my thanks for the offer of resolution of any further difficulties.  Other than that mentioned earlier about the inability to create an Acronis System Report I have one other (hopefully) small problem which I have added to the bottom of this post. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Hello shadowsports,

I have looked at your link to the MS article, but in this case that didn't apply as the Event was appearing as Try&Decide was selected and failed to run.  Logic tells me the information in the article could be true of other software besides the OS itself as the two must be linked directly.  My computer/programming skills are not up to confirming the method/manner though.  I determined this from the fact that a similar indication exists when I attempt to generate an Acronis System Report - this is still not functional.

Hello Pat L,

I now have my backups sorted as I said in my post to Volkan; I should have looked more closely at the toolbar instead of relying on the automatic search at startup.  Not to worry that problem is resolved.

As for Try&Decide, it certainly starts when selected, but as yet I haven't used it and can't confirm its functionality.  I believe that as it starts it should be fine.

My 'new' problem concerns the Acronis Secure Zone.

Whilst attempting to understand why Try&Decide wasn't working, it was suggested to me that it may be because it need an Acronis secure Zone to work within.  As a result I created one; now I don't need it I can find no way of reverting the drive back to its original configuration.  Currently it is a volume of 217GB set as a 'Simple Partition' which I have no need of.

Is there a way of deleting this and adding it back to the original partition volume to be used as I originally had it?  It seems odd that Acronis can create this but using 'Remove' leaves the space as unallocated.

Once again my thanks to you all for your assistance.
