"Failed to write to sector. Logical drive is read only"

Thread needs solution

I'm using Acronis True Image Home 2009. I searched the knowledge base and couldn't find a solution for this. Has anyone ever gotten this error (see title) when trying to back up your entire computer / HDD?

I'm booting from a flash drive, into Acronis (which is on the flash drive) and trying to save the image to an external USB hard drive. I've tried two different external hard drives at this point, both getting this error.

I don't know if the problem is with Acronis or with the HDD I'm trying to image. Maybe the issue is partitioning.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks

Hello Dustin,

No worries, I will take care of this issue to get it resolved.

We have faced similar issues, they were related to some kind of source inaccessibility, this could happen due to encryption software, drive corruption or unsupported drive type.

So first of all please disable all encryption software (if any) and decrypt the source drive. Then please check the disks for errors:

- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r"
where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that
checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

If this does not help, please clarify the following:

-Does this error occur for all your internal drives\partitions?

-Could you please let me know the build number of the product, which you can find in the Help -> About dialog (it should be a 3 or 4 digit number)?

-Please also collect Acronis Report file, which will help us to analyze the structure of your hard drives. In order to create Acronis Report file, please download Acronis Report utility, run it and create a report. The default name of this file is "report.txt" and it is saved on your desktop.
Please attach the file to your answer in this thread.

Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Thank you.
