Failure to restore backup

Thread needs solution

There's a deadline coming up and I start getting the blue screen of death when windows starts. Okay get out the backup disc. Disc boots fine and sees the backup file on the usb drive but when I try to restore the partition it just seems to hang. The head drive activity light is on permanently but there is no activity in the progress bars. I can't cancel or anything. It has worked before. Help appreciated.

Your BSOD may be hardware related and whatever the problem may be causing the recovery to fail.

How long did you let the machine run when trying to recover. TI's progress bars are not a good indication of much of anything and if the recovery may cause the run light to be on solidly and keyboard response can be very sluggish.

Have your recovered before such that you know the process does work on your PC? This is another reason for always doing a test restore or at least validation from the boot CD with TI (or any other backup software). Rather than do a restore, try doing a Validate of the archive on the USB drive. This may give some further insight into the issue being hardware or software.

If you can't Validate, download the .iso for Memtest86+ and burn it to a CD and then boot it. This will check the RAM and will also give another indication if the PC is operational.

If the disk light is truly indicating a problem it can be with the controller or the drive. If you have another drive, try it. If not, download the drive manufacturer's diagnostic program and try it.

I have a similar problem (using True Image 10). When restoring a backup, the process always stops at "21 Minutes". A check of the image also stops at a defined point.

If it is not able to restore the image, I have approximately 2 days work to set up the computer again.

Hello all,

Let me assist you with this issue.

Seekforever is right - BSOD itself may be caused by bunch of factors - starting from hardware or connection problems up to software compatibility issues. So in each case it should be investigate individually.

James, could you clarify, when and how exactly does the CD hang? Do you receive any error messages during the process?

Is the BSOD still reproducible? Can you make a digital photo of blue screen and attach to your answer in your thread, so we can analyze the code?

Willi, I assume that your version is Acronis True Image 10 Home.

I'd recommend you to download the version which is based on another loader (the version has some extended list of drivers and startup parameters). I have sent you the PM with the link to download. Please post the results in this thread.

You can find more information on how to burn an ISO image to a CD here.

I'd like to make sure all your queries regarding Acronis products are resolved.
Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Thank you.
