File restore fails
I have just re-installed Windows 7 Home 64 bit and TIH 2011 (part of the Security package) with the Plus Pack. I am now able to run backups of an internal hard drive and a NAS device mapped permanently to my computer.
This is a pleasant change from my prior Windows installation, in which Acronis would not run backups at all.
I have run several full and daily backups. I have run backups of the C drive to the Acronis zone as well.
When I selected two files to restore a file from the NAS I noticed the legend "Selected to recover" next to the "Recover" button showed an error. When I selected files from the C drive to recover I got a file size calculation.
I tried both restores, from C and from the NAS device, re-directed to C. The restore sits in queue and goes nowhere. One of them did create a folder at the new location.
If is wonderful to have a fast and efficient backup. It is all the more essential for restores from those backups to work. They are not working.
This is a virgin installation of Windows 7. It has hardly been on the Internet and it has very little software installed.
For the original problem I was asked to send in some computer dumpes to the Acronis FTP site and a second level technician promised to help get the problem resolved. It has been well over a month and nothing has happened. Let's hope someone on this forum has an answer in a bit less time.

I will try using shared folders instead of a drive letter to restore to the NAS. I understand that a NAS can be a problem both for restoring and to back up to it and try to restore from it. If necessary I wll have Windows synchronize two critical folders on the NAS to one of my internal drives, which can then be backed up normally.
The other test I ran was to restore a file backed up to the Acronis Zone to the C drive. I selected the file from the list and chose the option to re-direct it. The job queued and the system created the folder specified but no data appeared after 1/2 hour.
I moved the existing file to a new folder and attemmpted to restore the same file from the Acronis Zone to its original location on C. That job queued but after 1/2 hour it had not recovered anything. The file was a small jpg picture.
As for the 2nd level technician, I don't know if that is what Acronis calls them but the e-mail I got said the problem had been given to a higher level technician. I heard from them when they promised to do everything they could to resolve the problem. I have not heard much since.
The purpose of backup software is to permit restoring data wen it is needed. If you cannot restore the data then there is really no reason to run a backup. Acronis does everything I want. It will make a start-up image that can be used to repair a dead ssytem. It will back up entire volumes or individual folders and files. It offers on-line backup.
I can find nothing as fully featured as Acronis TIH. Now, if only it worked....

This is not looking good. We have one thing working and others failing.
When I started my system this evening Acronis came up and started a backup. It immediately reported that it could not find a file so it was hanging. This has happened several times.
I tried to start the GUI but it would not start. After several attempts I opened Task Manager and found five instances of TrueIMage.Exe running. After I killed all of them I was able to start the GUI. That was happening before I re-installed Windows.
I killed that job that had tried to run. I could not find a log entry explaining what happened. I ran a file restore from the C drive to its original location and this time it worked. I tried a restore from the NAS device to C and the log said the file could not be found. The job reported no errors but the file was not restored. That is a serious matter.
I could not find a simple way to read the log files. I had to find a job with an error and read from there. The listing truncates the text badly and there is no obvious way to widen it. I found that the window can be expanded but there is no indication this is the case and the window looks to be a fixed sise.
I checked the backup configuration and found the NAS device was being backed up as a network device. I switched to a UNC of \\ \
under My Computer. A backup is running and I will test a restore later.
So we have several problems. 1) The GUI does not always come up; 2) the log files are not easily found or read; 3) Restores are unreliable; and, 4) backups of the NAS device did run and file histories were available but files cannot be restored.
Has the 2011 version gone totally to hell in a hand basket? Perhaps Acronis needs to stock up on hand baskets. The 2010 version had much better functionality and far better reliability. Is this worth dealing with or should I say, "Dasvidaniya, Acronis"?

Well, I tried the restore from a backup made using the UNC instead of a network drive.
The same thing happens. The backup queues and then announces it succeeded. There is no file restored. The log shows the following:
. . Recovery of:
. . Files
. . Recover to:
. . C:\Temp\Test Restore
. . File or folder '\\device\volume\path\filename' cannot be found in the specified backup.
The file is shown in the recovery list. That is how I chose it to restore it.

I tried a restore from the NAS device to C and the log said the file could not be found.
Do you mean that you were restoring a backup, created by backing up files located on NAS? (not obvious) Or restoring from a .tib archive located on NAS?
