Flashing cursor after restoring backup

Thread needs solution

Acronis True Image home 10.0 build 4,942

Acer Aspire One
Windows XP Home

I tried to restore a backup using Acronis True Image Home made with an identical Acer Aspire One. I know it can be done because I've done it previously from one machine to the other.

I was stuck on "3 minutes left" for quite a while and then it must have tried to reboot. Now all I have is a flashing cursor.

I am able to get into the BIOS with F2, but that is all I can do.

Any suggestions, other than reinstalling the OS from scratch? There is no disc drive on this netbook.

Hi Bob,

I'm sure you undertand that stopping a restore mid way would result in a non-bootable system.

Since we don't know what happened, have you tried to run the restore operation again?

Do you know with certainty the drive is healthy and free from defects?

Have you tried to validate the image you are restoring to confirm its integrity?

After confirming the above, I'd try again before giving up and installing from scratch.

I didn't stop a restore.  It was restoring and showed "3 minutes remaining."  I turned my head and when I looked back, I had the flashing cursor.

The drive was working perfectly fine before I tried to restore it.

I validated the image after it was created.

I tried restoring again from a new image and got this:

Invalid_sectors_per_track

no GRLDR

Bob, are you able to boot from an alternative software distribution such as a Linux based distro?

See https://livecdlist.com/ for a list of live boot CD's, some of which can be created on USB if needed or do you have an external USB CD/DVD drive to attach to the netbook?

I would recommend wiping the internal hard drive before attempting a further restore - the System Rescue CD/USB in the live CD list is capable of doing this if needed.

Bob,

Do you have access to any computer with any version of True Image?  If so, you should use that computer to make an Acronis rescue media on a USB stick.  Since you can get to BIOS on your Acer Aspire, you should then be able to select a USB drive for boot....boot from the Acronis rescue media USB and then attempt another restore.

Well, after many attempts at creating a bootable USB flash drive with no success, I borrowed a Windows disc and an external cd/dvd drive and reinstalled the operating system.

I am up and running.

Hi Bob, I am glad that you have got your netbook back up and running again but sorry that you couldn't do so with your Acronis backup image.

I would recommend trying to create a working USB bootable flash drive as it would save you a lot of problems in the future should you need to have a go at this type of recovery again.
