Hi Gerry. It's quite simple really. Or it would be if the true significance of installing an application that inserts, semi-permanently, its own device class filter services into the operating system's control set were fully understood and appreciated by all concerned.

Very briefly, it means that your operating system's hardware abstraction layer (HAL) is no longer fully "in charge" of handling those device classes -- in this case the DiskDrive and Volume classes. Instead, storage device handling becomes dependent on the HAL-bypass capabilities of that application's own installed versions of its filter drivers. Surprising as it may seem, it so happens that TIH 2012 is less capable in that respect than some previous TIH filter-driver versions, or at least less broadly capable in terms of the range of storage hardware that it seems able to handle properly and without problematic quirks. Support for USB devices, in particular, is acknowledged as a residual known issue. There are others.

You can either wait for Acronis to improve it's current TIH driver versions and hope that they include your particular storage device within their range of capabilities, or you can revert to the version that worked for you before until they do. And the latter remedy ain't always as easy as you might expect.
