Had troubles with recovery

Hi everyone,
running windows 8.1, I made a backup of all o.s. partitions in order to save all the work I had done so far installing all my stuff.
I left out of the backup the Data partition, since I thought it would be left untouched.
When I had to do a restore, Acronis warned me that the disk was not empty and that the data would be overwritten.
Proceeded, and... the data partition was gone. The main partition, the OS one, had the size of all the space on my disk.
I DID NOT use the clone disk option, just the usual partitions backup.
What happened?
