HDD Problems, Clone New HDD

Thread needs solution

Hi,

My HDD is stsrting to play up, it wouldn't let me defrag etc, ran a check disc, came back with corrupt attribute & file record segmant unreadable, also windows is giving me a popup now saying the HDD has problems and to back it up.

Om my main 1GB HDD, it's in 2 partitions, C & D, i've backed each of them up with Acronis TI, but my question is, if i fit my spare HDD, would the cloning the drive work ok, or is the unreadable sectors going to give me problems?

If you have a disk and partition backup of all the partitions of your disk, you just need that backup to restore.
If you are missing some hidden partitions (check in disk management console), you can create a new backup of those missing.
If you are not comfortable going back to your last backup, you can create a new backup and ask to ignore bad sectors in the options, or you can try to clone.

If Windows is telling you should back it up, it is very likely SMART is telling windows the disk is failing.

thanks for replying.

i'm making a full backup of both partitions, including the mbr

will i need to partition my new 1GB HDD to 500 each (as what the failing HDD is) before i restore? or will ATI do that?

You don't need to partition before restoring:
- if you restore the entire disk (all partitions and MBR-Track0), the partitions will be laid out exactly the way they were,
- if you restore each partition one by one, you will have the opportunity to resize them, then the last restore is the MBR+track0

Do the restore from the recovery CD.
Once started, in Tools, choose add new disk, select your new disk (that you will have put in its definitive place ahead of the boot),. This will clean it.
Then do your restore

thanks again, you've pointed me in the right direction and i'll maybe try this tomorrw.

cheers
