Help with cloning XP HDD to SSD

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I need some help with cloning my HP6910p notebook HDD to SSD using Acronis true image 2014 and running XP.

I have tried cloning in windows and boot from acronis recovery usb and then tried to make clone, both with failure. I have put the new ssd disk into the computer as it should.

My old hdd and my new ssd is the same size, 128gb, and my new ssd is a kingston hyperX savage.

So I need some help what try...?

thanks,

regards

ES,

Here's how I would proceed.

Have you backed up your old HDD using ATI 2014?  If not, I would reinstall the old HDD and do a full system backup.  That will protect you if something goes drastically wrong during the cloning.  If you haven't been using ATI 2014 for full system backups, make sure you use the full disk mode, not partition mode.

Once your old HDD is backed up, install the SSD and boot with USB.  Prior to doing the clone, I would "Add new drive"  and select MBR.  Make sure you select the new SSD for this operation.  Some times, when you boot with USB, the drive letters get swapped.  If you accidently select your old drive and perform an "Add new drive" you would wipe out all of the data off of your old drive.  This is why I recommend doing a backup before cloning.

Once you have added the new drive, then proceed with the clone.

Do not discard your old HDD.  You can periodically clone back to it and keep it as a spare in case your SDD malfunctions.

Please let me know if this worked.  If this doesn't work, then you could try a "Restore" from your full system backup.

Thanks for the help.

I have now followed the steps mentioned, and it did start cloning, but... After around 2min it came ut with an error message, cloning failed. And from the fault message it says that "file record corrupted" ( 0x70019 )

What does this tell..??

ES,

I think your old hdd is beginning to fail. Your purchase of the SSD is timely.

You could run chkdsk which might repair the old hdde.  Or you could do a "Restore".  Personally, I would try the "Restore" first.

Please let me know how you do.

Hi,

Just an update.

Did run scandisk and defrag on my hdd. And after that it did clone my new ssd, started up with the new disk and everything seams to be working fine:)

Is there some other program and settings I need to do since I am running in XP?

Regards,

Es

Es,

Congratulations on your success!  And thanks for providing your feedback.

As far as other programs...Do you have the full version of ATI 2014 or the limited version that is included with some SSDs?  If you only have the limited version I would recommend upgrading to the full version of 2014.  I don't know if Acronis still offers upgrades to 2014, or they may require you to upgrade to 2016.  Either way, I recommend acquiring an external hard disk...USB3.  Start doing backups on a regular basis.
