help with de-merge partitions

Thread needs solution

I have a single hdd (drive1) partitioned as "C" (o/s and progs) and "D" (CAD apps and data). I also have a spare hdd that I would like to introduce to the system as "D" and move the contents of drive1 partition D to the new drive.

Drive 1 - Partition 1 (40GB) - "C:" o/s & progs ----------------->Drive 1 - Partition 1 (80GB) - "C:" o/s & progs
Partition 2 (40GB) - "D:" data & CAD apps ----------------->Drive 2 - Partition 1 (80GB) - "C:" data & CAD apps

I know I could image the D partition of drive1 and restore it the the 2nd drive, then remove the D partition from drive1, but is there a way to do this and maintain the registry associations ?

If your programs are just going by the drive letter of the partition, it should be fine as long as you assign D: to the "Data" partition on the second drive.

If your programs are using absolute reference (Disk Signature, for example), you will lose that since you can't have two drives with identical signatures connected at the same time.

In most cases, I don't think there would be a problem. I've read that some CAD apps can be problematic when it comes to drives and activation, though.
