Help, I need to transfer my disk before it dies.

Thread needs solution

Hi,
Please bear with me as I've read the users manual and the knowledge base but I'm still unsure how to proceed. I tried cloning my old SATA drive (not WD) to a new larger WD SATA drive using TI WD edition. The drives are recognized during the setup but when I hit the procede button to start the clone which first requires a system reboot, the system locks the C drive and then reboots into windows. From windows you get an acronis text indicating that it is analyzing partitions with a graph that goes to 100%. After about a minute I get a message error: disk not found press any key to reboot. WD says that the software requires both a WD source and target drive to work however I get the same result using the Acronis trial version.
I then decided to try using backup to make a disk image of the old drive and then use a boot CD to restore the image to the new drive. My question is will this work and can I save the disk image to the new drive before I try to restore it to that drive or will the image be lost in the setup of that new drive. Since the image is about 25GB I currently have no place available to save it to with that amount of space free. Im running Win XP sp3 in a dell dimention 8400. Thanks for any help you can give me. I'm new at this drive manipulating stuff.

1. Any data that is on the target disk at time of restoration or cloning will be lost so it is not possible to store your backup there.
2. You need an external drive for backups. Face up to the fact that you are going to have to buy one (or borrow one) if you are serious about backups.
3. Yes, if you have a disk option backup

then yes, you will be able to restore your backup onto a new larger drive. But, you need someplace to store that backup and 25GB is too much to try and backup and restore using DVD's which is neither practical and often does not reach a successful conclusion.
4. As it stands right now, it appears that cloning is your only option due to the absence of an external storage for storing a backup. Best cloning results are when the cloning is performed from the TI Rescue CD. I do not know whether the WD version of TrueImage offers cloning from the WD TI Rescue CD or not. Unfortunately, the trial version of 2010 does not offer the cloning option when using the trial Rescue CD.

When cloning or restoring a full disk archive:
A. Remove the old drive and install a new blank drive in its place.
B. Relocate the old drive in another locations such as an external enclosure or other internal location.
If you have no place to locate the drive, then create a disk image backup and restore the backup (from an alternate storage location) onto a new drive but the location of new drive still needs to be where the old one was when operating.
C. Bootup from A TI Rescue CD and perform the intended procedure.
D. Shutdown and remove all external drive so only the new one is installed.
E. Boot up for the first time with only the new drive installed.

GroverH thanks for the very clear info. I will see if the cloning can be done from from the boot cd. If not I will get another drive which I can use after the clone for backups. Thanks again.
