How to access Universal Restore

Thread needs solution

I need to restore an image to disimilar hardware but I'm unable to access the UR option in ATIH or media builder.

There is a link in ATIH to download UR. The simple instructions are "download and install". The problem is that there is no install file. burning or mounting the iso reveals a folder named Recovery Manager.  The folder and the files inside have the same names as is found on a recovery usb. Fine, I guess I could copy the files to the media, but that still doesn't put it in windows. What am I missing? How do I use the "AcronisUniversalRestore.iso" file to implement UR into ATI or media builder to create the boot media?

Thanks for any help.

It would be helpful for us if you could provide the version and build of the ATIH product you are usiung?

Apologies, I posted thinking I was in a 2014 forum rather than 2014 and older :) .

2014 premium Build 6688 - thanks.

The Universal Restore ISO file available under your account needs to be burned to a cd.  The link below contains more details on the two step process.

https://kb.acronis.com/content/47792

Universal Restore included with True Image 2014 will not recognize the Windows 10 operating system.

Thanks for your comments, Joey. I have downloaded the iso and burned it to CD, but I can't seem to find any info about what to do with it from that point. The iso file contains a folder named 'Recovery Manager' (as does the burned CD). What do I do with it? Do I copy the folder to the mediabuilder directory? How do I complete the process to gain UR in ATIH windows Restore and mediabuilder?

I'm not exactly sure why the kb instructed me to burn the iso file if it's not bootable or what to do with it?

There seem to be 2 issues:

1. How do I build the UR boot media from mediabuilder (which is how I assume it needs to be done)?

2. How do I get the UR option in Recovery. Running Recovery from within windows produces a link to download UR rather than an option to choose. The download link:

https://kb.acronis.com/ati2014/aur

Note the arrowed "Downloading Acronis Universal Restore" & "Applying Acronis Universal Restore" links. Am I missing the objective, or is there a gap of missing info between the two?

Also, it is the same on another machine, same version & build (all legal copies). One machine is Win7 pro x64, the other win8.1 pro x64.

It looks like the documentation was updated with information that doesn't apply to 2014 since the last time I viewed it. True Image 2015 and 2016 include a Universal Restore media builder that is downloaded and installed on the system to build the media.

In 2014, the CD that you burned from the ISO is your precompiled Universal Restore rescue media.  You do not build it.  You just burn ISO to a CD and boot your computer from that CD when you are ready to apply Universal Restore to an operating system.  Acronis did not provide a way to create rescue media with both True Image and Universal Restore in the 2014 version.

First you have to boot the computer with the True Image 2014 rescue media and perform a normal recovery on the new hardware.  After it completes you have to boot the computer again from the Universal Restore CD and apply Universal Restore to the operating system to make it bootable on the new hardware.

Well, one problem is solved. The "bootable CD" issue was a machine issue. I placed the CD in a 3rd system here and it did indeed boot up to universal restore, and would seem to confirm your explanation. So I'll have to work on the boot issue at my end.

First you have to boot the computer with the True Image 2014 rescue media and perform a normal recovery on the new hardware.  After it completes you have to boot the computer again from the Universal Restore CD and apply Universal Restore to the operating system to make it bootable on the new hardware.

The link below (which was updated in Sept. of this year...the latest one as far as I can tell), seems to indicate that it's an all-in-one disk. I guess it's for a later version (even though the 2014 spash screen is one of the screenshots)? The screenshots show a Universal Restore option that must be chosen. Doing so causes a Driver Manager page to become relevant. Of course, niether the UR option nor the Driver Manager page appear on my 2014 rescue disk (build 6688).

So I guess the questions are:

1. Is the UR option in the rescue CD necessary? Can I do a normal restore, remove the rescue cd, insert the UR CD and expect success (as your post seems to say, but the KB forces the question)?

2. Can a bootable USB be created from the iso file?

3. In my case, I really don't need to restore the image, as I'm just changing the motherboard. Would it be possible to replace the motherboard and run UR to inject the drivers?

Thanks for emphasizing the 'bootability' of the UR download...it prompted me to try it in another system. Also thanks for your input.

Useless:

The latest nonsense KB

Just stopping back in to update. First, apologies for the broken link in my last post. I've corrected it, and here it is again

As you can see, it's totally irrelevant to the reality for UR for ATI 2014.

It turns out that I didn't even need UR in my case. After changing the motherboard, windows provided the needed sata controller drivers, etc. Then I just installed the motherboard drivers and all is well.

Thanks for your comments. Of course, this thread would have been entirely unnecessary if Acronis had it together. It's just plain stupid to mass update kbs with non-relevant information.

Thanks for the comments. And thanks, Joey for filling in the blanks for the 2014 version.
