How to back up a encrypted Truecrypt drive??

Thread needs solution

I am trying to back up my True Crypt drive while unencrypted or while encrypted using the trial version of TI 2011.

I tried mounting the True Crypt volume and running a backup on the folders/files on the drive but the drive is not seen by TI.

I tried mounting the True Crypt volume and doing a disk backup but when the task starts it errors out and the error log reads "failed to lock volume snapshot"
I believe this is due to the True Crypt GUI used to load the encrypted drive.I tried this both with and without "sector by sector mode"

I tried UN-mounting the True Crypt volume both with and without "sector by sector mode"

I tried mounting the True Crypt volume and right clicking it under my computer and selecting the TI "backup" menu option and the TI GUI never appears. I also tried this with the individual files on the encrypted drive with the same results.

Can someone give me some other suggestions?

I think the only way to accomplish this is to;

1. Unencrypt the drive.

2. Use Sector by Sector imaging if wanting it to be encrypted.

I would expect an unencrypted drive to be seen by TI if Windows Explorer can see it.

By unencrypted are you saying mount the True Crypt drive?

Because I figured that would work no problem seeing once mounted the drive is unencrypted but it did not.

For what ever reason True Image only sees the "Disk and Partition backup" and not "file backup".

I have a similar problem . I keep my "My Documents" folder on a truecrypt encrypted drive. TIH 2011 does not see the truecrypt drive. This was not a problem when I was using TIH 2010, under TIH 2010 I could see the truecrypt encrypted and navigate to my "My Documents" folder to perform TIH 2010 sceduled backups. It appears to me TIH 2011 does not support truecrypt drives. I am using Windows 7, truecrypt 7 and trueimage 2011. Is there a workround to this problem.

Very interesting John, I could have sworn that TI 2010 did indeed see the mounted True crypt drive.. Thanks for confirming.

Does anyone at Acronis have a answer for this? as it seems to be something that may have been over looked in the re-coding of the new version.

Which program was installed first (TI 2010 or TrueCrypt)? In many cases with drive encryption, the order of the filter drivers is important. It's possible that the drivers for TI 2010 ended up in a different order than when TI 2011 was installed.

Initially Truecrypt would have been installed first and then TIH 2009 as these are two of the programs I rely on. Since the Initial build I have upgraded to TIH 2010 with no problems in accessing truecrypt drives. Its only since the upgrade to TIH 2011 that I have been unable to see the truecrypt drive from TIH 2011. Please note the truecrypt drive is an "encrypted file container ", not whole disk or partition encryption. TIH 2011 does not see the truecrypt drive on my portable USB hard disk eithier, this also is an "encrypted file container ", not a whole disk or partition.
I did have problems with TIH2011 not installing, a web chat with the Acronis help desk fixed the install problem, but this did involve uninstalling TIH 2010 and downloading a couple of clean up programs to remove all traces of TIH 2010, see attached file for details.

Please note both of my encrypted drives are accessable from windows 7.

Same problem to me (WIN XP pro) : since having upgraded to TIH 2011 yesterday the program does not recognize my encrypted non-system drive. TIH 2010 did so, and though I could not perform a partition or drive based backup at least I could perform a file based backup.

Btw: Truecrypt is running on my system since long time and did never cause any trouble with former versions of TrueImage.

Peter

Meanwhile I uninstalled TIH 2011 (with quite a couple of problems ....) and reinstalled the previous version.
Everything works fine again with Truecrypt.

So keep on working guys and fix this issue asap!

Thank you.

Looks like TIH 2011 doesnt currently support truecrypt . Peter, thanks for confirming downgrading to TIH 2010 restores the ability to back up files in truecrpt drives. Guess we will have to wait for TIH 2011 updates to see if the problem gets fixed.

Regards
John

Please take care, John, because uninstalling TIH 2011 including Plus-Pack 2011 (btw. German version) was not so easy and took a lot of manual work stopping services, cleaning registry, autostart and directories.
It too destroyed my environment path, so I had to restore this from an earlier backup - lots of strange things, oh yeah!

I would like to hear something from Acronis responsibles - the new version still is banana-ware, and I consider keeping TIH 2010 and stop upgrading every year. Too much trouble - it did cost me one weekend to find out and fix.
Yours, Peter

Thanks for the warning Peter, I will stick with TIH 2011 for now, if it is such a nightmare to down grade. Will revert to Syncback SE for my document backups, till Acronis fix TIH 2011.

Regards John

I have run several tests and was able to get TI 2011 to see both a mounted standard volume and a mounted standard file container by mounting them as removable media. This option is in Settings >> Preferences in TrueCrypt.

Note that TrueCrypt mounts are not the only ones affected by this problem.

If you try this, see if you can then browse the backup. So far, I just get a "flash" of the expandable options and then they vanish from the screen. I'm not an expert on TrueCrypt so I may have something configured incorrectly. I can browse a standard TI file backup just fine.

Trying to include files from both C: and from a TrueCrypt volume into a backup fails, but no error is reported in the log.

I have to correct myself, sorry Acronis: the deletion of the environmental variable was on my behalf - working the registry manually (there was a reference to Acronis and I deleted the whole path ....). Nevertheless: as long as uninstall routines don't work shit happens.

@MudCrab: I don't know how TIH 2011 works with Truecrypt containers, as I crypt a whole non system drive.
This works fine with XP but many programs don't see the mounted file system. Acronis TIH 2010 did - so I could (at least) perform a file backup. TIH 2011 doesn't: it now behaves like many other backup/imaging programs.

So in my consideration this behavior is a missing feature - not a bug!

Peter

Hi,
Changed my truecrypt drive to a removable media type, rebooted PC, but TIH 2011 still refuses to see it. I am on TIH 2011 build 5105. Tend to agree with Peter , the ability to see mounted truecrypt drives is missing from TIH 2011 at the moment. I will continue to use TIH 2011 for my scheduled system drive backups, as this is my primary use for TI, I suspect over time TIH will undergo build uplifts that will restore the ability of TIH 2011 to see truecrypt mounted drives. Always seem to get these kind of problems on first release of any software, par for the course these days.

Regards John

Again TIH 2011 and Truecrypt (7.0) encryption.

1.
TIH 2011 does see and can handle encrypted system drives (on my computer drive C:) and can back it up as image or file backup: no problem.
(I am aware that this backup is NOT encrypted any more by Truecrypt - so I use the encryption option of TIH.)

2.
TIH 2011 does not see any drive encrypted by Trucrypt (in my system: Drive D:) - TIH 2010 did and still does after re-installation.

I cannot say anything about encrypted partitions or file containers - any experiences?

Mounting my internal encrypted hard disk as removable device - not really what I want to to.

Still waiting for any reaction by Acronis, being aware that it may not be that trivial solving this thing.

Peter

OK, I've seen Anton's statement in the other thread, Acronis is working on it. So far so good.
Meanwhile I got an answer for my support request: do a sector by sector image with your rescue disk. (http://kb.acronis.com/content/1649)
Yep, this works - but who wants.

OK Anton, if there's any question or anything I can do to solve this point, do not hesitate to contact me.
Peter

Hello fellow sufferers.

I also ran in this dam TrueImage 2011/Truecrypt Problem.

I am running a Win7 Machine with one encrypted System Partition and two encrypted non system partitions.
The non system partitions are mounted automatically during system start using pre boot authentication.

Doing drive backups is no Problem (unfortunately only sector by sector for the two non system partitions) but doing file based backups of the non system partitions is impossible because True Image does not show the drives. (as discussed in this thread).

But now the good news:
I found a workaround we can use till there is a proper solution.

Just mount the encrypted partitions onto an NTFS junction point that resides in the root folder of the encrypted system partition and use this junction points to do file backups.

To do that, you can use the free tool ‘Junction Link Magic’.

For example:

My system consists of 3 encrypted partitions.
One system partition (Volume C:)
Two non system partitions (Volume D: and E:)

To mount the two latter ones onto the junction points, start ‘Junction Link Magic’ and push the ‘Create’ button.
Now (in the left tree called ‘host folder’) navigate to the root folder of Volume C: and create two new folders by pressing the button ‘New folder…’.
It is essential to call them ‘Drive(D)’ and ‘Drive(E)’ because you want to link to the volumes D: and E:
If you are unable to see the newly created folders just reopen the dialog.

Now select ‘Drive(D)’ on the host folder tree and volume ‘D:’ on the target folder and push the ‘Create’ Button.
Do the same for ‘Drive(E)’.

Now you can use the newly created junction points ‘Drive(D)’ and ‘Drive(E) to backup and restore files of the encrypted non system partitions.

Please apologize my clumsy English. ;=)

This seems to work fine! Nice work around.
I just mounted my encrypted drive D: with "Junctions Magic Link", and now TIH 2011 recognizes the new folder Drive (D) with all files included in my encrypted drive.

So far so good - no, even better: great!

Before I go to work and start (again!!) backing up my whole system - are there any side effects, I would have to take care of?

Chapeau, Peter

Markus Bollig,

Did you verify that you could successfully restore the backed up files from the TrueCrypt files?

I don't know if it was just something in my tests or not, but I couldn't restore the ones I backed up when mounted as removable. I'm hoping that problem doesn't affect your method (I haven't tried it yet).

Markus Bollig,

Thanks for the work round, works fine for me , I use a truecrypt "encrypted file container ". The only thing I have noticed is that when the files are restored from the TIH 2011 backup, they have the following security status, "No permissions have been assigned for this object" ( I only found this because each of the files / folders have a small paddlock overlaid on the original icon). Does not seem to affect the restored files I can edit documents , move and delete files. Looks like the process removes the security settings for the files, these can easily be reapplied by adding myself as the object owner.

(Windows 7, truecrypt 7, TIH 2011)

Hello All.
Please accept our apologies for the late response.
We've created a new ticket in our internal tracking system (ID 96528). It will be fixed in the upcoming update of Acronis True Inage Home 2011 (in 1-2 months).
Thank you for your feedback.

Hi Rustam,

So for those of us who cannot get ATIH2011 to work satisfactorily on our systems in the way we want, we will have to wait yet another 2 months for an update to 2011 that will then take me just over the year to get something that may work over the failings of ATIH2010.

When this update comes out can you guarantee that ALL Acronis products will then work together - when will the updates to the others be released so that we can all be assured that we have a suite of software that works correctly individually and also together? By the other products I am talking about DD11, OSS and ADM in conjunction with ATIH2011.

I have to say that I do find this VERY unsatisfactory!!

I hope that Acronis will be extending the free support period so that we all have the chance to download, install and test these updates and have support for any issues we find.

I did try ATIH2011 on my main system but took it off again when it took over half an hour to shut down due to ATIH. This was when I had an appointment to get to and was VERY inconvenient.

I look forward to hearing your reply.

Hi,

Same problem to me (win 7 and True Crypt 7.oa) TI 2011 (5519) does not see the mounted drives

Regards
Gerard

hello...I just wanted to point out, that I got the same problem since upgrading and that I am hoping for a solution in the next update, as promised in one of the messages before, as I think there are quite some peoples who are concernec by this issue...
(and of course because I want to backup my files....)

Hello,
I also have the same written problems with truImageHome2011. File-Backups of encrypted TrueImage7.0 Volumes (mounted as D:) are not possible as TIH does not see any files in its includes directory browser. Windows7 Explorer perfectly sees the files and folders. Backup of encrypted system Volume c: also works fine.
My system is Win7Pro64Bit and TIH2011 Build 5519

This must be fixed by Acronis engineers. As it is an basic feature of a backup software to backup files and folders.

I am also very disappointed that Acronis is not able to timely resolve that issue.
I get the feeling that early adopters are used just as beta testers. (That would be OK only in case I need not pay for the product.)

Just to tell you my personal conlusion: While I was recommending Acronis True Image to everyone as THE solution for backing up their computer I will tell them now: Look for an alternative. E.g. the Windows built-in backup. (So am I.)

Regards
Volker

I'd wait, myself, at least until the end of November before giving up entirely on Acronis managing to fix the problem.

I have recently purchased and returned TIH. Just came back to this thread to see if there is a solution by now. Seems that this is not taken very seriously by acronis.

When asking for my refund the support rep would not give me any eta for the fix. There is none.

I should have received my refund by now. Good luck everyone with this backup-software which cannot see the files to backup :D

I believe a fix is imminent in regards to the TrueCrypt problem, though I would think there are some other things that are being ironed out as well. By imminent I'm still going with the end of this month as my best guess.

There is nothing special in viewing TrueCrypt drives within a file dialog. With True Image Home 2011, I'm not able to select the files I have to backup when they are located in a drive folder which is mounted by TrueCrypt. True Image is completely worthless to me. In True Image Home 2010, I can backup such files without any problems. Why shouldn't it be possible with the new program version within months?
I'm very disappointed about this. There is no comment when the failure will be removed. I would never buy a software from Acronis again, due to the fact, that after one year of development the product is worse than before. There is absolutely no reason why a drive folder isn't visible in a simple file dialog. Every simple program is able to do that because this feature is provided by Windows without any effort.

Hello all,

I would like to thank everyone for their patience and valuable feedback.

The issue with TrueCrypt drives has been resolved in Update 1 which we recently released. Please check this link for additional information.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

I was optimistic that this Update would solve the problem, but it has only partially solved it.

I can now see and select the drive and files in edit settings, but when I save the settings, it gives me an error of "The specified file does not exist." When I reopen the settings screen, all of the files I had selected from the TrueCrypt drive are not selected anymore. I still cannot backup the files from my TrueCrypt drive. See attached file for the exact error.

When I informed Acronis Tech support of this through an open case that I have, I received this unacceptable response:

"Thank you for your response.

Please understand that Acronis True Image software is not compatible with TrueCrypt disk encryption software, therefore it is requested to decrypt the volumes and then use Acronis software to backup your encrypted volumes. This is the only workaround available. I regret to inform you that it is impossible to backup encrypted volumes using Acronis software. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Please let me know, if you have any other questions. I will leave your case open until you confirm this resolves your issue.

I look forward to your response.

Regards, "

Acronis!! Please come up with a complete solution.

Hello,
I has no more problems. With me now everything functions in the best way. File backup goes also from crypted volume. Everything well.
Thank you Acronis

jack

I just installed the update on my XPprof-system and it worked.
I must admit that I only performed a short test: backup a couple of files from my encrypted d: drive, validate the backup and restore the files. ok so far.

Some "not so good" observations:
First: After the update I had to re-activate TIH. Not really a bug, but annoying. Others do better.
Second: All my backup history was gone - each job said: Not saved yet ...

What bothers me more is Acronis' reaction on Mathews problems. "There is a incompatibility betwen TrueCrypt and True ImageHome...." Do they anything know I don't?

By the way: I had the same error message trying to create a backup file manually - clicked it away and anything looked like working fine though. Maybe not the best preconditions for security related software?

Finally I'd wish to put it back into focus: all what we are talking about in this thread worked fine in previous version(s).
I am afraid that next version might be incompatible to ANY system/configuration/computer ;-)

In future spending my money elsewhere, Peter

I think Mathew's response might be a case of the left hand of Acronis hasn't spoken to the right hand concerning the new build.

Either way it obviously still isn't working for him, though others seem to have had their problems resolved with this build.

I don't use TrueCrypt, is there more than one way of setting it up? I'm just wondering if there are differences between Mathew's setup different TC version perhaps to those whose problems have been solved.

Just installed latest version. It has fixed the truecrypt problem for me. It also loads up a lot quicker.

Thinking about the same.
Appears there is some fix for the truecrypt problem that the mounted drive cannot be seen, in a new build of trueImage, but me having (this morning downloaded) build 5519 and I saw a newer build mentioned, but TrueZimage update does not see anything newer.
Talks on the forum, also from Acronis Moderator, about a fix must be hidden nicely as I cannot find it.
Maybe better to go back to 2010 version in which everything worked fine with Truecrypt?
If moderator sees this mail, what is the best to do here?
Want this to function now, if possible, as I really value my backups.

Pieter,

I'm assuming you have the Dutch language version.

I don't know if build 6597 has been released in Dutch, but if it has, it will be available for you to download from your account.

Thanks for the info !
Indeed I have the dutch version, so now waiting for the dutch build update, then.
Wonder when that will be available.
Thanks again,
Pvdbie

Hmm, I think I either have another problem or the issue is not solved. I'm using version 6597 on my workstation and I cannot disk backup a mounted Truecrypt drive. It denotes partition 3 (D: in Truecrypt) as an unnamed partition that can only be backed up sector-by-sector.

So, when I mount D: in Truecrypt as F: (this can be any drive letter NOT in use), Acronis TI does not list F: as a disk. Funnily, it does offer to save images to F:/.

So to summarize: When I mount physical disk D as virtual disk F, the latter is not seen as a disk in Acronis TI home.

Any advice?

I have(latest!) dutch version 5519, and have the same.
Cannot image a mounted truecrypt drive, as it is not seen correctly by trueimage; can only be done sector-by-sector. truecrypt drive is also not named.
looks still to be a problem for this new version of TrueImage 2011; now waiting for a dutch version build which will work, and in meantime (on recently bought laptop) installed old version 2010, which worked fine. Sofar too bad to have done the purchase of the new version, but hope it will be okay soon.
Probably, if solving theproblem is underway, it will be first an english version that will be without problems; for me will take a while longer, then.

Today had an automatic download and install of dutch build 6597, and it looks as if it works fine now, with Truecrypt.
For now issue solved and closed to me.
Thanks all for assistance and guidance.

After a long time of trying and testing:

OK:
the basic glitch with enprypted drives/partitions was fixed (within a period of at least two months - and I remember: it worked already fine with the previous version). So I could work with the program.
Was I satisfied? No! There are so many bugs, inconviniences, strange behaviours that I lost any confidence in this security related piece of software. Being always afraid of your image maybe won't work for any reason if you need it: not exactly what I need and not exactly what I want.

So:
after many years of loyality to Acronis I quit. I bought another solution (yes - there are, and yes - they can!) and I deleted TIH. Never again will I buy any update - it's not worth it to me - neither time nor money.

Bye bye, Peter
