how to backup to NAS Synology
I am new to the system and want to back up my entire Windows 8 to my synology so if my machine crashes i can backup my whole system from there (this can be done right ?)
In the Acronis i cannot seem to see my Synology but i can see it in my network ? how can i add my NAS ?
PS im on the free trial for now

I do my backups to Synology as well. Don't expect to see the NAS under "NAS Connections". Simply backup either to CIFS/SMB shares (regular windows file service shares), or to FTP.

With FTP, can I select a folder for it to go into or will it place it in a generic location ?
Not familer with Cifs/Smb shares, is that a option under browse ?

With FTP, you will need to enable the FTP file service in the File Service Control Panel.
You will also need to enable a user with FTP access in the APplication Privilege Control Panel
If your NAS name is NAS, when you launch Acronis, choose the destination for your backup, select create a new FTP connection. Enter NAS as the destination, then the user name and password you have enabled. If you can connect, ATI will show you the shared folders where the user has access that you have enabled with FTP R/W access.
Yes, you can navigate down to a particular folder there.
CIFS/SMB is the standard protocol for Windows shares. In the Files Services control panel, enable Windows File Services. All Synology Shared folders will show in your computer network (unless you have selected to hide the share in the shared folder control panel).
If I were you, I would use Windows shares. Easier to deal with it.

Hi Pat, since you have a synology system and i'm probably setting up the FTP like you are, when you enter the IP adress; mine looks like this :
My IP says 111.111.1.11:XXXXwebman/index.cgi.....i only enter ftp://111.111.1.11, correct ?
I also have not done anything with my router yet.

Correct. I can access the ftp server on my Synology and the browser shows the shares for which the user I choose to login with. Remember that this user needs to be set up with FTP access privilege in the application privilege access panel AND needs to have read or read/write access to the share(s) you want to make available through FTP.
Finally, remember that FTP is not a secure protocol. Before opening your FTP access to outside the firewall, make sure you understand that credentials are send in the clear. Acronis doesn't support FTPS nor SFTP which are 2 distinct secure ways of doing FTP.

so i went through the setup and do i need a host name with synology ? i heard its optional but w=once done and it automatically setup port forwarding i went into Acronis> NAS (nothing there)> added new FTP connection and when putting my credentials in: nothing.

Are you trying to access the NAS through FTP when you are away from home, or only when you are on your local network?
if yes, let's first try to set it up on the home network. Once this works, we will address the remote access.

The PC that is on the same network and the NAS, now i am at home but have not tried it from here, the whole tie its been on the same network as the NAS.

OK. Then in Acronis enter the network name of the NAS. For example, if your NAS is seen as CLOUD on the windows network, enter simply CLOUD, no quotes, no slashe in the ATI dialog box.

under my network places i see it as JASONS, i add just JASONS then my user name and password > press test and fails to connect.
If i use filezilla to log into ny NAS it sees it.
I'm at home and trying to log in and same issue as my work PC, with my hoe i don't have my NAS umder my net work, ive been just logging into the NAS via the net.

So you can log into the NAS FTP server using filezilla or the likes of WinSCP, right?
Can you add and remove files using these FTP apps?

at the work PC where the NAS is on the same network i can use Filezilla but at home i cant use filezilla or the Acronis.
Has to be something with the FTP but....in my credentials in Acrions at home, what would i put into the FTP..an ip adress or my quick connect ID with Synology ?

When the NAS and the computer are on the same network, in ACronis, you just enter your NAS name, as it appears on the network. CLOUD for example.
If you try to access the NAS through FTP remotely:
- the firewall that protects the network where the NAS has to forward the traffic to your NAS. For example, you would redirect traffic to the router port 8021 to the NAS IP address on the port 21.
- you would then enter cloud.connect.synology.me (use this form or equivalent, rather than the form with the slash) port 8021 into Filezilla or WinSCP to test. If you cannot connect with Filezilla you have a firewall issue either at home, or at work and/or your work router is not set up properly to forward FTP traffic to the NAS.

Synology has the EZ port where it is supposed to do all the port forwarding but i don't believe it has OR....do i need static IP ? LAN connection 1 is static but LAN 2 is not, my Synology when connected to LAN 1 that is static could not be seen so i connected it to LAN2

As soon as you move out of the local subnet where the NAS is, you wlll need to use quickconnect (or your preferred DDNS provider) to access the NAS through its external internet name.
I understand at this point that when the NAS and the computer are on the same network, both filezilla and Acronis can see the FTP server right.
Go to the Synology control panel and verify that port 21 is set to the FTP port.
Then go to your Router UI and do 2 things:
- in the DHCP server settings, do a manual IP assignment to your NAS
- in the port forwarding settings, forward the port 8021 to the IP address of your NAS, port 21. The Ezconnect service doesn't let you set an external port number different from the internal port. Setting an external port like 8021 makes it easier to avoid conflict with other FTP servers (if any) on the network.
Then try to access the FTP server with filezilla.

So you want your work laptop to access your work network where the Synology is?
- Log in to post comments

Hi Pat, yes, i would like my laptop that is everywhere with me to access the Synology which is at work to backup everyday
- Log in to post comments

You have to go to work, connect to the Synology there
- go to the control panel, external access, select the router configuration tab
- verify that the connection for FTP is set up with port forwarding,
- if not, go to control panel, info center, select the services tab, and make sure FTP is selected for port forwarding,
- go back to the router configuration and test the connection. If the connection doesn't work, talk to your IT guy to open and forward whatever port (let's say 8021) to the port 21 of the worstation
- once this ports are open, try from home to access the ftp server with FileZilla by using the DDNS name of your NAS followed by :8021 (in my example, YourNAS.connect.synology.me:8021
- once you have successfully access the FTP server and maybe uploaded a couple of files, you can set up ATI with the same settings.

Hello again, im at it again and i can only give so much time to it in front of the PC and dedicate time for something that should be easy. Acronis is my last hurdle on my Synology
On my Synology i an access it 2 ways when i am remote and both options are using the web, entering "quickconnect.to/MYUERNAME" or "MYUSERNAME.quickconnect.to" then i'm in my Synology.
So now i have Acronis, it asks me to enter in PATH, USER NAME and PASSWORD, so in the PATH i put either of the 2 i mentioned and credentials and no go.
I've tried the IP address of my Synology and credentials and same thing.
Im told it's in my Synology or my router or Acronis (mind hibernating)

Try //MYUSERNAME/and see if that helps. If it is the credentials that are giving you trouble you should set them up in Windows Credential Manager if they are not already there.
