How can I determine what files I can delete - hard drive is getting full?

Thread needs solution

Sorry did a quick search but did not find answer to this question.

So I have True Image backing up to a Western Digital hard drive and I want to back up the hard drive (double back up). Need to reduce file space as the second back up drive has less space than the Western Digital.

When I look into the folder where the back is saved there are several files with different dates. Each file though has a different size. How do I know what files I can delete and what to keep to reduce the space?

Thanks! Syd

Maybe a screen capture of your storage folder would help.
Basically, any full is independent--if all from the same task & backup scheme.

If you have full plus incremental -all from the same task & backup scheme, you can delete all, or keep the full and delete all the incremental

If you have full plus differential--all from the same task & backkup scheme, you can delete all, or keep the full plus the most recent differential.

Sounds like you need to stop using your current backup back and create a new task with automatic cleanup so the progrram will do its own cleanup of oldest chains. Here are some example of custom schemes which use automatic cleanup.

------------------------------------------------

Depending upon the type of backup scheme you wish to create, here is an example of each type. These can be set up for Disk image, or Partiton, or Files-folders backups. These example show how to set up automatic cleanup so the program will do the deletion after it reaches your set goal of how many chains to retain.

Editing an existing task is not recommended. Rarely does an edited task perform to user expectations. It is usually better to start with a new task using a new non-identical task name and point to a new storage sub-folder so each task has it own storage folder/sub-folder. Old task can be stopped or deleted from the task listings.

GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup....Store/Keep 4 versions (chains). Use whatever number best fits the individual needs..

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 2 Diff per chain. Store/Keep 2 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Thanks very much GroverH! That was very helpful! I have changed the settings in my back up according to GH11.

Going to give it a try today. I'll let you know if there was an issue.

I hope your comments does not mean that you edited and changed your existing task so you are still using the old revised task.
I hope it meant that you stopped using the old and created a new task with the new settings.

Give it a try. If your problems continue, then be prepared to start over with a new task.
