How do I delete backups from my ext drive that were from an old discarded computer?

Thread needs solution

I've bought a new computer. I was using Acronis True Image 2015 to back the old one up to a Toshiba 1TB ext drive. I've moved my Acronis license to the new machine, and it's running correctly.

But I've half filled up the Toshiba with backups for the old computer I no longer need.

What's the right way to free up space on the Toshiba? Can I just use standard file management techniques to read the contents and delete the files I can tell I don't need, based on the file title or folder they're in? Or is there a better way to do that?
