How does overwrite files during backup work in 2012?

I can't find theory of operation anywhere.

How does ATI 2014 handle files in an incremental backup if the backup drive fills up?

Does it delete the oldest file and continue to backup properly or does it fail?

I found a well-hidden dialog box titled "Backup Version Consolidation" with some choices that make absolutely no sense.

1. Is there some other way to tell what is going to happen?

2. Is there some way to choose what is going to happen other than in the cryptic "Backup Version Consolidation" dialog box?
