How to Image/Clone NT4 SP3 Disk?

Thread needs solution

Any possible way to image an old NT4 SP3 disk with hopes of then getting it into VMWare? Plant personnel are afraid to try to update to SP6 but this machine is on its deathbed. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Steve, welcome to these public User Forums.

Given the age of any system running Windows NT4 your disk drive is going to be an IDE / PATA drive and this in turn may be limited in the size of replacement disk supported by the system!

I have seen older computers which do not support IDE/PATA drives larger than around 40GB, and have had very old computers where the drive size was in MB not GB!

The best recommendation I can make would be to consider investing in a hardware clone solution with a docking station that can take both the old and a new drive (of equal or larger size) and can either be connected to a more recent computer or can perform an offline clone.

See Amazon search results here: - but please ensure you pick one that does allow IDE / PATA drives to be connected.  Many of these solutions are aimed only at newer SATA drives which have a completely different interface pin layout.

Aside from all the above, I would strongly recommend looking for a new solution for your plant process that relies on such old hardware & software, as your task here is only going to go from being very difficult to being impossible!  Most computers of this vintage have either long been scrapped or are in museums now!
