How to move Windows 7 from RAID0 HD to SSD

Thread needs solution

Let me first apologies for my complete lack of knowledge in all things to do with cloning and imaging.

I have just bought the Acronis True Image 2010 software as I am going to try and replace my two 36GB Raptors in RAID0 with a single 80GB Intel SSD.

Unfortunately I need a bit of help to give me the confidence to go and do it.

I am confused as to whether I should clone my drive or restore from an image.

At present after reading things on this forum I am swaying towards cloning. Is this right?

If I do go down the cloning route I am not sure of a few things.

First – I have read that the SSD should go on the first SATA port. I don’t think I can do this as this will be used for one of the RAID drives. Can I just connect it to the third SATA port to clone it? After cloning can I then just move it to the first SATA port?

Second – Do I clone from within the windows environment, or do I have to boot my system from an Acronis bootable CD to clone?

Third – Will the cloned image not have the wrong drivers in it for the SSD to work properly?

If I go down the image route do I just install Windows 7 to my new SSD and then recover from my saved image file?

Sorry for the dumb ass questions but I have tried to read as much as I can on the forum.

Hello Douglas,

Let me clarify this situation for you.

The cloning is intended to transfer the information from one hard drive to another, so this is not a solution here, since your RAID contains several drives.

In your situation the best choice would be to backup your RAID (either from Windows or from CD, this does not matter), it will create the image of entire RAID (with its all hard drives), save this image to some external location (USB or FireWire HDD, for example).

After that, replace the RAID with your SSD drive, make sure that it's recognized by BIOS correctly.

After that, please boot your PC from the Standalone Version of the product and perform the recovery of the image to your new SD drive. Please check Chapter 6 of this User's Guide for the detailed information about backup and chapter 10 for the recovery procedure.

If I go down the image route do I just install Windows 7 to my new SSD and then recover from my saved image file?

Yes, this can be used as an alternative solution - you can install your Windows 7 to the new drive, and then restore separate files \ folders from the backup. Do not restore the whole RAID backup in this case - it will erase your fresh installed Windows 7.

Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Thank you.
