How to restore confusion - 2012 Plus Pack

Thread needs solution

Acronis SOS to Forum

Hello,
After weeks of working on old Acer Aspire running old Acronis True Image Home 2012 (also have Version 8 and Plus Pack) I turned to my Acronis backup.

I dutifully back up weekly onto Seagate Free Agent removable hard drive.

Nothing worked to get my computer back to working to connect WiFi Internet. I have disks for the XP OS “somewhere” that I was unable to locate. I figured that I could get what I need from them. I moved recently and can’t find the disks anywhere. I figured that the computer would stay offline until I came across those XP Pro disks. (Let’s not discuss XP though. I’m satisfied and I do have a computer running 8.1).

Even as the computer would not connect with the Internet, I dutifully backed up with Acronis weekly. I figured that my problem was deeper than what was on the Acronis backups but decided to give it a try. I used one from before the problem hit, no luck. I kept doing that, going back and back. One day, I booted up and the computer desktop looked like it did in December, and I was deluged with Internet messages to update and upgrade this and that. Hooray! My Acronis restore fixed whatever.

Now, I cannot figure out how to restore the “minor stuff,” all the documents and updates that have been modified or are new since December.

I get overwhelmed by the Help and the Acronis 2012 User Guide. Once again I am wasting hours trying to figure it out and trying things that may or may not work or might even return the computer to disaster state.

This morning I thought I’d write a letter to support, but this version no longer gets support (I do intend to upgrade this year, just not yet).

Searching Acronis I found this support from users, so am sharing this info in hopes that someone might direct me, either/or, and/or by reference to what I need to pay attention to in the User Guide, the Plus Pack Guide, or the steps to take to bring the “superficials” up to date again. I don’t want to mess with deep OS stuff, just update the changes I’ve made with documents, database, programs, and the like.

I think the Plus Pack Guide has nearest to information that I can understand. I’ll work with that and check in here periodically to see if anyone here has a tip or tips for me.

If you’ve read this far, thank you! If you have some tips, major thank you!

Hello Tim,

Sounds like you need to restore user data which is doable. You mention database which I take it is also user created saved files and programs which raises a question mark as program data unless it is something created and saved by the user is probably not recoverable. Example, you installed XYZ program after the point in time that your current restored system is at, that program would need to be reinstalled.

Here is a link that should help in your situation. Basically what you need to do is Mount your backup image, choose the folders/files you wish to restore, and retrieve them. There are 2 ways that can be done. One is by using the TI 2012 application, the other using Windows Explorer. Both methods are explained in the provided link. Just expand each referenced method on the resulting web page link for instructions. Good Luck.

Thanks for the tips Enchanted One.
The database referred to is Microsoft Access, to which changes are made often as records are added, deleted, and modified.
I'm amused by my subject line as abbreviated, "How to restore confusion." It's, of course, confusion about how to restore but in my bewildrerd state, it did give me a smile.
I'll check your link and see if it won't clarify things a bit. I've always liked True Image conceptually, and once in a rare eclipse time (such as this), or you might say, Blue Moon, I can find the amazing power to save and see (and ideally restore) files that would be impossible to view without True Image.
Blah, blah, blah.
As they say here on Maui, mahalo.

Well, after more hours yesterday, I am still flummoxed. It was really, really, hard to get anywhere with TI alone, a little easier with Explorer, still struggling with the steps to get what I hope to get (the latest versions of documents and files). After restoring to December, I still have files that have been updated that I'd like to plug back in. I've tried copy and paste, drag and drop. I do not quite get the part about "mounting image." I've located the updated files but how to get them from Acronis TI to replace/update . . . I just can't get.

Mounting an image simply means that you are virtually accessing the image as if it were an active drive more or less. In locating the updated files as you say you have mounted the image. Using Windows Explorer you should be able to copy and paste or drag and drop files/folders to your system. Are you saying that this does not work?
