How to restore individual files from disk backup? ATI 2013

Thread needs solution

I upgraded my laptop OS from Vista to WIN7. I want to restore selected files and folders from the ATI backup. My backup is a disk Archive on an ASZ. The only option I appear to have is a whole disk restore, which is not what I want. I've searched the documentation and KB to no avail. How do I do this?

btw - I can mount the backup as a drive, but do not have permission to read any of the files in the C:/Users/myuser folder.

Settings? Really? What a horribly inappropriate and non-intuitive place to put this. How about making it a tab on the Recovery Tab?? Nobody would think to look there, right? Acronis is a bullet-proof product I have been using for years at home and at work. I've used it on Windows workstations and Small Business Server. I've recovered to new drives and completely new hardware, but I'll have to say the human interface when recovering, either in this example or in a whole-system recover, SUCKS! I almost always need to either refer to the manual (e.g. no indication that one has to right-click on the selected archive to see the list of files ...), or get help from someone like you. I hope Acronis has improved this in later versions.

I've only recovered 2 folders at the moment. I'll post back with final results.

OK, I was able to restore all needed files and folders. However, clicking on a folder gave a message (not exact) "You do not have permission to access this folder. Click to get permission". Clicking on the button then gave me permission to the folder and all subordinate files and folders. Files on the desktop still give "Access to [filename] was denied." Even setting ownership of the file to the local admin user didn't help. I have a workaround by copying the file to Linux. Deleting the file on the Windows laptop, then copying back from Linux, but this is a bit of a pain to do for all files.

I had a similar issue at the office when replacing the SBS2008 system. As soon as the SBS2008 was offline, the years of ABR10 backups were suddenly worthless. No ability to access the backup files from another computer -- needed the original SBS Domain user(s).

I don't think this is an uncommon restore situation. I hope Acronis improves this in more recent versions.

I would do some practice of restoring files and folders when booted from the user created TI Recovery CD.
If the restore file is accessible via the CD, a restore should be possible.

In fact, that worked fine. The whole procedure was that I swapped out the original Vista drive with a brand-new drive (just in case!), booted from the TI recovery CD, formatted the new drive, then restored from my TI backup. That all worked great. Then, I upgraded Windows 7. I was not actually able to upgrade and had to do a complete installation of WIN 7, which required me to create a new user account. I then attempted to restore that user's files and folders from the TI backup. That's where the problem comes in. Even though I named the computer and user account with the same names as the Vista, I'm sure there are internal hash values or what-not that don't match.

That's the situation I'm talking about. Restoring to exactly the same is not the problem. It's when the target is a different system from the backup. Likewise when I went to restore individual files and folders from the mothballed SBS2008; I could not restore the backup files unless logged in as the original user. The SBS2008 system was long gone, along with its users. I'll try experimenting with those old backups using the obscure trick you gave me.
