How to Upgrade

Thread needs solution

I have True Image 11, build 8101. It looks like there are no updates for this older version.

I can't get any support for my "Device not Ready" problem, and no one's responding to my post, http://forum.acronis.com/forum/13251

so, I'm hoping I can Upgrade to the current version to solve my problem.

Can I pay for an Upgrade, or do I need to pay full price?

Yes, 8101 was the last build for the version 11. Are you having this problem with the installed Windows version or the user created Bootable Meda ? One option open is to download another version of the bootable media available from your registration page.

There is also a trial version of the current 2010 available for you to download from the main Acronis Website.

Most likely, the 2011 version is in beta testing. There is the possibility that a 2011 version may be released this fall-winter but this has not been confirmed.

Your issue still sounds like it might be related to the external drive and this may not be an Acronis issue.

When is your drive not being recognized? Is this from within Windows or when booted from the CD? What version of Windows>

You can buy either an upgrade or a new release--it is your choice. Buying the upgrade is less expensive but does require the additional input of your version 11 serial number.

If you try the trial version, be sure and perform a backup of your system. This should be a full backup to include all partitions!

If you try the trial version, be sure and uninstall the old version before trying the new trail version.

Did you try a different usb cable and did you try plugging the cable into a different connector on the computer. Do not use a USB-hub since you are having problems.

OK Grover! I'm using XP home.

I was plugging it into one of two usb ports on the front of my computer. I just tried the other port, and this time the error was "cannot open archive for writing".

"Do not use a USB-hub" Do you mean the ports of the front, instead, I should try the ones on the back of the computer?

"Are you having this problem with the installed Windows version or the user created Bootable Meda ?"

sorry not sure what you mean. I plug in the HD and connect it to computer, then open Acronis, and select "backup" then go thru the steps. backup computer>discs and partitions>partitions selection (I choose NTFS and leave the fat 16 unchecked)>backup archive location (my HD F is selected)use default options

could you take a look at the log if it'll help?

really appreciate the help!

When having usb connection problems, it is best that the usb cable be connected to a port in the rear of the computer.

The problem you are having with the usb device.... are you inside normal windows at this point?

or did you boot from the TrueImage Rescue Bootable Media CD and the usb connection problem is occuring when running from the CD?

A usb-hub is an extra device whose usb cable plugs into any usb port and provides multiple usb connection points. These are not recommended for use with TrueImageHome if you are having connection problems.

"The problem you are having with the usb device.... are you inside normal windows at this point?"

sorry again Grover, don't know what that means. I open Acronis and try the backup, I can't find the disc so I'm not using that.

I'll try the rear usb port!

darn, I'm trying to Safely Remove Hardware and it says it can't be stopped, try again later. Is there a workaround, so I can stop it and change the usb post?

Based on your response, I believe you have Windows running and have opened TrueImage from a desktop or start menu item.

At the top of this page, there is a search option. Search for "device not ready" and look at some of the past questions/answers.

Before starting TrueImage, open Windows Explorer and double click on the external drive to assure that the external drive is running and functional.

When selecting the target location, are you absolutely certain that you are selecting the external drive. The type error you are getting is often associated with an empty CD/DVD device rather than a hard drive.

If you want to learn more about the TrueImage Rescue CD, click on my signature below and look at item #2 within the signature index.

I've already searched for Drive not Ready. There's one hit in the Knowledge base and I followed the instructions to go to Computer Management> Policies> and click the 'Optimize for quick removal' box, but it was already checked. The other hit was my post http://forum.acronis.com/forum/13251 where i'm asking about the error i'm getting.

"Before starting TrueImage, open Windows Explorer and double click on the external drive to assure that the external drive is running and functional" I did that, clicked and opened a OneTouch_4 (G) folder (see screenshot), but how do I determine if it's running and functional?

really appreciate the help, hope we can resolve this!

OK, I'm going to upgrade, but I still have an issue with the HD it seems. Not sure if it's 'running and functional.'

Also, I still can't Safely Remove the HD. Keep getting the message to try again later. The light on the HD keeps flashing on and off.

Is there a workaround for this? Could it be the software that came with the Maxtor HD is keeping it active? Can I just unplug it's power cord to make it stop so I can remove it?

After I upgrade Acronis, should I format the HD, and start my new backup with a fresh clean disc?

You accessed the drive so it is "functional". A reformat may or may not have any effect on the error. You won't know until you try. You could also check the disk for errors. Also go to the Maxtor site and see if they have any firmware upgrades for the drive. If you decide to upgrade, reread my post #1.

Boot from the TI Home Rescue Cd and perform a backup and validation from within the CD or when booted into the CD.See if you get the same error.

Thanks for your help Grover!

I formatted the HD, checked it for errors, went ahead and bought the newest Acronis, and was able to finally do a backup!
