HP Laptop to external backup to HP laptop with same specs. Possible?

Thread needs solution

Hello newboy here, advice needed, I have Both True Image and Disk Director. I had a HP HDX16t running windows 7 ultimate.. The keybooard went bad so HP have agreed to swap out for another laptop with exactly the same specs ie HP HDX16. Will it be possible to put my uncompressed backup onto my new laptop? I have one backup and 4 sequential. I am using a freecom tough portable hard drive Any advice gratefully received, Mike T

While the specs may be the same, the hardware may differ and you will need the Universal Restore option to restore the old Backup Image. Did the new laptop come with the OS? If it did, it might be quicker to reinstall all your apps including True Image. Then you can use Windows Explorer to explore the Image and pull out your data (pics, music etc.) from the portable.

Hello and thank for your response. The old operating system
was Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
the new one I will install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
do you mean install acronis and then do a image recovery
I also have the old hp recovery discs and acronis recovery
disk, would this work? Mike T

True Image is capable of extracting *data* files (and folders) from an Image file that it made - the .tib file. Actually it can extract even the folders in which the apps reside but the apps will not run because of missing registry entries so you must re-install the apps.
The bootable True Image CD cannot do this, only the installed software.
To extract a file from an Image, open Windows Explorer and go to where you have the Image. 2-click the Image just as if it was a folder and it will open up. Then drill down to where you have your data and copy it to wherever you need it.

Great! Bit what I do not understand is.
I made a complete copy (image)
of the partition. I did not back up files
I went to back up, then backup computer
and then backed up the whole partiom.
I thought I could place that whole partition
on my new laptop? Mike T

It may work ... you will not know till you try it - since the new laptop doesn't yet have anything, you have nothing to lose.

Mike,
If you manually create an additional partition on your new laptop, then you can probably restore the old backup as a data partition so you can get to the files, etc but not as a bootable partition.

Thank you all for your advice. I have just phoned HP asking where my replacement was. Answer? Still in the warehouse!
That's Spain for you!
Anyway when it comes all pristine and new it will have Vista home premium I believe.
I was first going to try putting my Bootable Acronis Disk in, then linking up my Freecom portable drive.
Then restart the laptop so it starts from the Acronis Disk, go to recover and then just copy the whole partition over and overwriting the originial. If I remember correctly you get a choice to make it an active partition. My only concern is will it be recognizes as a valid backup...
It should arrive Monday or Tuesday so watch this space!
Once again, your advice is much appreciated. Mike T
