I can't see backup files in the .tib file

Thread needs solution

Under my previous backup scheme I could view all the files within the .tib file, using Windows Explorer.

Yesterday I changed the backup plan, started a new one, and created a new full PC backup. It worked fine with no error messages. But now, I can't see the files within the .tib file - when I click on the .tib file, it opens a balnk window showing (at the very bottom) 0 items. However it does shows as having a size of 540GB (in line with previously), and within the Acronis Recover screens, I can see the full tree showing all folders and files (so clearly, they are there!). Doing that however is far too laborious for a casual glance at something.

Can someone explain what I need to do to view the files/folders in Windows Explorer? Yes, my settings *DO* show hidden files. I did nothing in setting up this plan, different to the previous one.

- using Acronis True Image 2015 Build 6525
- using Windows 7 Professionsl 64-bit

Suggest you reboot the PC

Try to right click on the tib file and choose properties at the bottom of the menu. Check that under attributes the Hidden option the corresponding box is not checked.

Yep, already done that - no, nothing is hidden, boxes all unchecked (and the default View settings in Explorer are also to show all hidden files)

Well you have covered the most common problems. A less common one is that possibly file association for the tib files has been changed. To check look in Control Panel Home > Default Programs > Set Associations and adjust if necessary. Other than that I am out of ideas.

To use this option, TrueImage must be installed.
From within Windows tib storage folder, or from within the task/operations/open location/
Have you tried double clicking on the tib file, and then keep clicking the resulting windows down the directory tree.
Once you get to the listing of all folders including the Users folder,
then click on your user name and then your listing of all your personal files should be accessible such as Docs, pictures, etc.
Once you get to the C:\Users folders option,

your files will be normally found in the
C:\users\your user name\Documents or your doc, etc.
C:\users\your user name\Pictures or Your pictures, etc.

Thanks for all the help, but no joy. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled the full Acronis True Image product, and still the same.

So I have no doubt that something strange has happened to my settings in Windows Explorer, but I can't for the life of me see what it is, and have no problems viewing other file types with a variety of software. Just this one isolated problem. Very strange.

I have the same problem, and have tried the same things as Chris Laurence, and I still can't see what files are in my Full PC backup to my external hard drive. Also this is my first Full PC Backup since updating from True Image 2013 to 2016, but whereas the new backup is only 190 GB, the old one was 985 GB.

Something is wrong. A Full PC backup should include ALL partitions on the system disk and be about 70% of all used space on system disk.

http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATI2016/index.html#2…

Check your mount settings to make sure you do not have any "old" mounts still mounted requiring a dismount.

Chris,
If the storage disk is USB2, on my machine, it took about 5 minutes before the file would open and each click deeper into the tree there was a resulting delay.

I am having the same issue with my Full Backup Image, it completes fine, but when I go to view the files there are greyed out icons for Documents, Program Data and others, when I go down to Users>My Name folders are grayed out in there also.  I do not have the Hidden folders turned on so nothing should be greyed out.  I have been using Acronis since version 8, and I have also been able to see everything in a full system backup.  Any Ideas would be greatly appreaciated.

I am running Acronis 2016 and Windows 10.

Hello Roy,

Are you able to copy files from those greyed out folders from the backup to Desktop, for example? If you have been able to open .tib files in Explorer and restore data from Explorer directly for a long time, and now you are not able to do that, I see 3 possible causes for that: 1) a problem with concrete backup, 2) damaged file system 3) corrupted settings of integration module Acronis<->Windows Explorer.

Try creating a new backup (could be disk or file-level), validate it and see if the issue persists. If it does, check the file system on the source and target disk volumes with chkdsk utility (https://www.tekrevue.com/tip/fix-hard-drives-chkdsk-windows-10/), for example, if you are backing up from C to E disks, run chkdsk C: /r and chkdsk E: /r

If that does not help, reinstall the software with cleanup tool. Reboot before installing Acronis True Image 2016 anew.

Regards,

Slava

I found what the issue was, at least for my situation! You have to access the backup through the Acronis 2016. If you do a restore by file you will be able to restore any file on your system that was backed up. I saved it to a different location just to test, and sure enough it restored it. I have been an Aconis user a long time, and in the earlier versions you use to be able to see everything, but I guess with the new version this is how they are verifing that you have a valid license!

This may apply in 2015 as it does in 2016...  Slightly different behavior, but wonder if it might resolve an issue where recovery is available from within Acronis, but can't be navigated by double clicking the .tib file:

try deleting all the files in C:\Users\[your_username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

When I try to do a file restore using TI 2016/Windows 10, I can only see the files from the most recent incremental back up.  Are you suggesting that I need to mount the previous incremental backups using TI 2016 in order to see the files from those back ups?

Hi, installing today the latest version of Acronis True Image 2016 (6571 release), I found a similar problem. During Acronis installation, Windows Explorer has opened a window with the requested tib.x64.sys file (C:\Users\user\AppData\...) but did not recognize it. So I copied the file on the Desktop and then in the previous Windows Explorer window I gave the new address in the direction of the Desktop. This way I regularly installed the latest version of Acronis.

Thank you for the feedback.  I used a similar approach to work around the hang-up in the update routine.

Acronis has been around for quite some time.  I had hoped they tested the processes better before sending them out to their devoted customers.

Ok I too cant copy files anymore from explorer even on backups made in 2015.  I have to go through the acronis program.

I suppose they are forcing me to use the cloud ???  NO CLOUD FOR ME THANKYOU

Can I go back to 2013 so I dont have to spend hours learning the corporate scandals that happend. I do not have time for all these updates that sabotoge everything usefull about the program.

So can I uninstall 2016 and go back to 2013 without restoring my computer back to before I installed 2016.   ?  ON windows 7..

I can not see my files as before in explorer when i look at my TIB backups .  This makes me wonder if I can still restore them as it makes no sence at all to me that I can not see them anymore.

Donald, this is a bug in the TibMounter code that Acronis has provided a fix for previously in forum post:
https://forum.acronis.com/forum/116874?page=1#comment-374611 where I have uploaded a copy of the patch in a zip file.

Thanks Steve, but before I pull down and load the .zip file, please clarify what it does.

Will the .zip file allow me to see the files in the TIB backup file using Windows Explorer on my backup media?  Is that what it does?

Or will it just allow me to copy the TIB file from my backup media onto my Desktop (for instance)?  If so, in this case, will I then be able to open the TIB file and view the files that have been backed up?

Thanks,

Herb

Herb,

After you download the .zip file extract the contents using Windows File Explorer, after extraction you will see a .exe file, right click on that file and choose run as administrator.  The pacth file will install itself and fix tibmounter so that you can use Windows File Explorer to view .tib files.

Sorry, but I down loaded the tib_monitor_setup_2637.zip file and opened it with Windows File Explorer, but there wasn't an .exe file as indicated above.  There was a file named tib_monitor_setup_2637.msi.  I double clicked that file and over rode the Windows warning on the file.  But I didn't see anything happen as you described above.

Do I have the right download?

Later: Sorry again guys!  It took Windows Explorer about 3 minutes to recognize the .msi file and then extract the Acronis fix.  I ran the extraction.  Then I tried to open a .tib file on my external backup hard drive.  I got the same results as before...I was unable to see any back up files in the .tib file.  I tried different .tib files too.

I rebooted my laptop and tried it again.  Same result.  I opened Acronis TE 2016 and tried it again.  No good.  I copied the .tib file to my local drive.  Still no good.

I’m back to where I started, unable to see any files in the .tib backups.  What am I doing wrong?

Herb, please check via the Control Panel, Programs and Features, that you have the Tib Mounter patch installed correctly - it should show as in my screen shot below.

Hi Steve,

Yes, I checked the Programs directory and everything is exactly the same as your screen shot...except my file size is 16.8 MB (not 33.6 MB) and installation date (mine says today’s date).  Other than that, it is exactly as you have it listed.

By the way, I did NOT see an .exe file in your zip file.  Just the msi file.  Any suggestions?

PS > I really appreciate the help, and I feel bad about the amount of time you are spending on this issue.

Herb, I am not sure that you have got the TibMounter patch installed correctly here.  My screen shot came from the Control Panel >> Programs and Features listing of installed programs, where the patch will be shown.

The contents of the zip file are a Microsoft Installer .MSI file that you right-click on, and take the option to Install for.

See further screen shots for the install process attached below.

Thanks again Steve.  I uninstalled the Tib Archive Monitor.  I downloaded the zip file again.  Opened it with File Explorer and double clicked the msi file.  All of my installation steps were exactly like the screen shots you attached above.  The new Tib Monitor, as viewed in Programs and Features is still 10.6 MB in size, not the larger 33.6 MB size as in your screen shot.  I checked //Program Files (86)/Common Files/Acronis and the four TIB Monitor directories are all there, just like in your screen shot.  So all looked good so far.

I copied a True Image 2012 tib file to my local drive and it successfully opened with File Explorer.  I could see all the backup sets and directories and files.  Marvelous!

I then copied a True Image 2016 tib file to my local drive and tried opening it with File Explorer.  I let File Explorer run a full ten (10) minutes unabated.  No good.  The progress bar stalled again.

Could you contact Acronis and have them test the Tib Archive Monitor on 2016 Tib files please?  According to my testing, the Tib Archive Monitor does not work on True Image 2016 incremental backup files.

I was the OP on this thread and have kept my eye on responses.

Regarding this latest batch between Herb and Steve Smith, I can confirm that my findings are exactly the same as Herb above. It seems that we are not the only ones. That "fix" with the .msi file installed ok, but seems to make no difference on either True Image 2015 or True Image 2016, it still won't open through Windows Explorer, only through the full True Image program interface.

Chris

Herb, Chris,

I have the same TibMounter patch installed on my Windows 10 systems with ATIH 2016 and can open my 2016 .TIB files in Windows Exporer with no problem at all, as shown in the attached screen shot.

If you don't already have it, please download the Log File Viewer app (link in my signature) and check your TibMounter log files to see if there are any relevant messages shown in these.

Can you also try the following option in Windows Explorer.

Navigate to where your ATIH 2016 image file is stored.
Right-click on the image file then select True Image then Mount.
Pick a drive letter to be used to mount the image file.
Wait for the mount process to proceed and for a mount successful message to be given (hopefully).

Look in your TibMounter logs for a log file created today (or the date when you do the above).

For reference, I see the following entries on my system for the above action plus a further unmount of the image.

Steve, now I’m quite confused and somewhat miffed.  You are testing using TIB Monitor Build 2564.  Yet you provided me with TIB Monitor Version 5.0.2637 in your zip file!  This may explain the different in file sizes that I’ve expressed previously.

HOW ABOUT GIVING ME HELP WITH THE DOWNLOAD YOU PROVIDED ME?  ß That’s the miffed part.  Are we using the same TIB Archive Monitor?  If not, that may explain the problems Chris and I are having…just a thought.

If they are the same TIB Monitor versions, then give me test results using the downloaded tib Monitor program you provided me, version 5.0.2637?  Try again please…

So before I spend any more time on this issue, please provide me solutions using the TIB Archive Monitor version 5.0.2637.

Herb,

You might be right to be miffed if I was doing what you suggest, however, I am not - all the screen shots I posted earlier were from my re-installing the 2637 Tib Mounter patch despite what you see in log files that I posted.

I confirmed this again today by uninstalling the 2637 patch, ending all Acronis Services & Processes, then reinstalling the patch again with no Acronis involvement to prevent it from replacing the existing version.

My logs remain the same, showing the older version information for the Tib Mounter API and Driver modules, however, if I look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\Tib Mounter\ folder then the tib_mounter_control.exe and TibMounterMonitor.exe both show version 2637.  The tib_mounter.dll shows as version 2564.  A patch does not necessarily replace all modules or components of the function being patched.

So, bottom line here, we are using the same Tib Mounter patch version, the log files do not show any entries for 2637 but that does not change this fact. This works fine for me but to set the context correctly, it worked fine before the patch too.

Thanks for confirming…now…Where can I get the Log File Viewer?

  1. Where are the log files stored?
  2. What should I be looking for in the log file?
  3. I’m still concerned that the Tib Archive Monitor file sizes that you have and that I have are quite dissimilar.

And just to confirm, I’m trying to open an incremental backup tib file (not a full partition backup) with File Explorer.  Should I opening any other process prior to the File Explorer?

Herb, please see the links in my signature below.

The log files are all held in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\ folders but the Log File Viewer will make navigating these logs much easier than reading through XML data in the raw files.

With regard to the size difference, this is just what is shown in the Control Panel > Programs and Features listing - if you want to compare actual file sizes then you need to look in the program folders starting at  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\

To confirm too, I can open both full and incremental backup files, including Files & Folders archives.  There is no need to open any other process assuming that Acronis was able to integrate into Windows when it was originally installed.

Acronis not listed in file types or file associations

File viewer not working like everyone else… When trying to view a backup in Windows explorer or Firefox the progress bar extends all the way into the “X” box but never completes. I get the same results when trying to view the backup from within Acronis. Acronis does indeed list the backups and I can select one and successfully make or recover them.

My problem is I reckon directly related to a problem I have not seen mentioned.   Acronis does indeed show in my installed programs BUT "Acronis" itself does NOT show in “set default Programs” list. Also The tib extension does NOT show does not show in “Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program”  So naturally I cannot use either to associate to anything.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the full Acronis True Image product, and still the same.

Everything used to work perfectly in Win7, but had to update Acronis as the version I had would not work in Win 10.

- Win 10 professional

-Acronis version 2016 -6581

-I do show hidden files

-I have installed TibMounter (shows as 17.9MB)

Cheers from Australia

Acronis relation to .tib and .tis files is built into the app. They aren't listed in Windows default files or file associations.

It sounds like a corruption of the install - possibly due to a previous upgrade or something else.  Simply removing with control panel does not get rid of all file associations.  Please uninstall through control panel, then run the cleanup tool, reboot and reinstall after that.  HOpefully all will be well then.  Please take a look at this post with step by step info - to make sure you have a clean start.

Yo Bobbo!!

You sir are a giant amoung men. I had all but given up hope. I followed your instructions (apparently exactly) and I can now view my backups in both IE and Thunderbird. I sincerly appreciate this and also the speed with which you got back to me and the carefully described instructions.

Cheers, Randy

Randy,

Glad to hear it!!!!!!  If / when you upgrade down the road, consider a cleanup brefore the new install as well.  Yeah, you have to start with new tasks when you do this, but it can  saves headaches down the road.  Most upgrades go OK, but I find each major version to be quite stable when just starting clean.
